Wikipedia has blacked out its own service today to raise awareness about SOPA and PIPA
"What are SOPA and PIPA?
SOPA and PIPA represent two bills in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate respectively. SOPA is short for the "Stop Online Piracy Act," and PIPA is an acronym for the "Protect IP Act." ("IP" stands for "intellectual property.") In short, these bills are efforts to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites, but, in our opinion, they do so in a way that actually infringes free expression while harming the Internet. Detailed information about these bills can be found in the Stop Online Piracy Act and PROTECT IP Act articles on Wikipedia, which are available during the blackout. GovTrack lets you follow both bills through the legislative process: SOPA on this page, and PIPA on this one. What SOPA could mean for dA
if somebody, as many people do, uploads copyright material to dA
then the site could be shut down within 5 days
effectively, if there are a few bad people who use dA
or even if a few people are simply accused of uploading copyright material
then the whole site, and all of the innocent parties are punished
there would be countless, expensive lawsuits, which would make dA far less proffitable, resulting in higher subscription fees, more advertising, advertising for subscribers, restrictions on storage, restrictions on download bandwidth...possibly
if somebody didn't like dA, they could act maliciously, by uploading copyright materials and effectively close down the site
the violators would be the responsibility of the site and the site would be responsible entirely
