Oh well! Where do I begin. I really liked how plausible the whole situation is, I mean in the HttyD universe. I can totally imagine Stoick having these thoughts and feelings. Also that you wrote the whole thing in Stoick's point of view! We never see in the movie (or in the series) how he deals with all that had happened to Hiccup, if he feels guilty/ashamed/etc. about being too stubborn when he should have been more open-minded, if he thinks about being able to could have prevented all this. Even his dream you wrote down must have felt like a nightmare to him after he woke up! And then he pushes all these thought to the back of his mind, because "He couldn't let himself look back." I think that is very in-character.
So yeah, your fanfic gave me a lot of feelings.

All right, ee, thank you again. I like the idea of Stoick being an imperfect father who improves over time, that he's the type of father to beat himself up for his mistakes. As you can tell from looking at my fanfiction, I like writing from Stoick's POV.
The dream probably did feel like a nightmare because it didn't happen in that way. Good dreams can be worse in that way, showing a perfect world where there isn't any.
