I have a question. Maybe you could help me.
Any ideas on where I could track down a copy of 'Mewtwo's Watching You?'

I've had the best luck on Amazon for that, when I've seen it pop up.Β You may get lucky and find it on Yahoo Auctions Japan (though you'll need to use a middleman service there.)Β I got two copies there, one for $25 and one for $55, a long time ago.Β There's also eBay but good luck getting a reasonable sale on it.

I am just curious... How is there anything "ethically" wrong about playing a Nuzlocke run? They're just bits of data. If you don't like Nuzlockes, okay, but it's just a game. They aren't real.

My main issues have to deal not with an individual player's run, but what depicting that run could inspire and lead to.Β Popular artists sometimes don't realize that how they play through their games will lead other people to feel that the way they do it is the "right" way.Β Given that both the original run and one or two other (unfortunately) notable runs have killing Mewtwo being a big plot point, naturally I'd be miffed to say the least.Β But it could have been any stationary catch where an artist would make a big deal about offing their opponent and suddenly everyone who follows that one artist's run does it the way they did.Β It just happened to be Mewtwo, so you hear me doing most of the bitching about it.
Just bits of data, maybe, but those imaginary bits of data have a very real effect on some peoples' lives, as I'm sure you have seen from /r/pokemon, dA, and some other forums.
Though it seems some steps have been taken, both by the developers of the real games and the community at large, to rectify some of that.Β As I posted in my recent journal, one-of Legendaries can't be permanently killed; they respawn after an E4 run each time, until they're caught.Β So a player can do their comic, defeat the Legendaries if they feel the need to, and then after an E4 run go ahead and catch them separate from their comic.Β And if someone doesn't want their legendaries...or hell, wants to part with their team members that fainted - Wonder Trade.Β The nuzlocke community seemed receptive to the idea of sending off their fallen comrades with Wonder Trade, as they're dead -to you- but there's no reason they can't live on in a less cruel world.Β I really do hope that catches on as much as I was led to believe it would.

That implies that there is a "wrong" way for somebody to play a game that they own. I mean, I pay for my games with my own money, and I am going to kill or catch what I want to kill or catch. If I want to release Pokemon when they "die", I am going to release them. It has absolutely no impact on anybody else, and it shouldn't be any of their business. The only bad thing that can actually happen when people copy other Nuzlocke comics/stories is unoriginal storytelling.

Just got home from work, and now I can take a more in-depth look at your page rather than just replying to you on mobile.Β I see that you posted a journal that hinted at least a dislike of nuzlockes, and then you were linked to my commission from JHall and seem to take exception to my viewpoints from that.Β Ironic, since I would think from your original journal such a comic would only strengthen resolve in your original viewpoint, not reverse it.
It's true that you buy the game, you can technically do what you want.Β And for a player that has absolutely no involvement with other Pokemon fans in the public eye, that sticks to the game solo, never trades with anyone, and so forth, I can agree with you that at that point your actions have no impact on anyone else.
However, I still stand by my point that by choosing to involve oneself with the Pokemon community at large, there is a duty to take what you do not need and give it to players who will make use of it.Β This includes, but is not limited to, fainted Pokemon in a nuzlocke run, Legendary Pokemon that you would not use yourself (both stationary captures and roamers), and pretty much anything you're not holding onto for breeding purposes, Pokedex completion/living Pokedex completion, competitive gameplay, etc. - if you have a Pokemon that is just going to fester in a box for the life of the game cartridge...c'mon man, let someone else use it/him/her.
I mean...hell, the game nearly flat out tells you to do this by implementing Wonder Trade in X/Y.Β You give away what you don't need and eventually it gets into the hands of someone who does need it.Β Sure, there'll be people who flood wonder trade with crap and hope to get better in return, but overall, over the long run, it'll get used for what it was intended for.
Maybe I'm sitting here preaching socialism through Pokemon, but I still think that in a game with a multiplayer aspect, you can't just look at how things affect only yourself.

My journal entry was not expressing a dislike for Nuzlockes, just the sad fact that sometimes they can screw you over. That was actually the latest in a line of entries talking about a Nuzlocke run I will be writing a story for starting later this month.
And I'm going to have to disagree with you that somebody who involves themselves with the community at large has any such obligation. Because again, they are not real creatures, and even if you were a Pokemon mega-celebrity, it's still your game, not anybody else's.
If person A chooses to let how person B plays his game affect him, then that isn't person B's fault. I mean, if person B loaded up a copy of X with a ton of one-of-a-kind event Torchics, and then released them all, and talked about it, then yeah, person A can get upset and be all "hey man, I would've wanted one of those." I could understand that, because it would be a total dick move.
But if person A chooses to kill Mewtwo in his own copy of the game, even if he were to advertise it⦠I mean, so what? People can catch Mewtwo in their own game. People can get an Action Replay and get a whole team of shiny Mewtwos. It only affects people if they let it.

Hey ^.^, this is like eons old but I felt the need to say I think what you did with/on JHALLs comic was pretty cool
you handled yourself far better than most people do on/off the internet when their beliefs are challenged in such a out right way that the internet tends to bring and even then you accepted that not everybody isn't going to believe what you believe... but even then you still tried
that is irrevocably cool to me, you have no idea
and I can understand what you're saying in regards to the Nuzloke runs, it's a little disheartening to see pokemon that others would adore to have just K.O'd
all in all I guess what i'm trying to get across is that I really admire how you handled yourself in regards to the hate and that your idea gave me some good fuel for thought were I ever to undertake a Nuzloke

Hey, I was looking at Pokesav comic you got from ~JHALLpokemon and I want to compliment you on the most mature and well-thought out argument for the usage of Pokesav I've ever read. Usually I just see whining and hatred (to the point to making me wonder why some of these people even continue to play if they have such problems) from Competitive Battlers, but you argued your side so perfectly.
I think I absolutely support the use of the program with the caveats you put in (I used to be rabidly against it), although I'd want people to do the actual training part (as opposed to the getting the perfect IV spread and Nature) themselves - I think that's part of the 'proper' work, but the rest are really valid points!
Kudos, man!

Thank you - I'm glad to hear that my commission got through to some people. That makes it more than worth it.
I take a lot of shit for a lot of stuff I post about. I'm used to it by now. Some of the shit's warranted, some isn't. When I go against the "norm" - tangling with people who do nuzlockes, lashing out at artists who demean Mewtwo in one way or another, when the people who post such things have a following, I'm going to get some backlash.
I'm the hero the Mewtwo fandom deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So they bitch at me and their fandoms lash back at me. But I can take it. I'm a not-so-silent guardian, a vengeful protector. I'm the Mewtwo fandom's goddamn Dark Knight.

My guess is that the 4 Genesect are clones of the Shiny Genesect, and Mewtwo will probably have a near-death experience or something. There was a rumor he dies too, but I hope it doesn't turn out that way.

MewtwoStruckBack In reply to BlondBeastBoy [2013-03-12 00:26:37 +0000 UTC]
Nintendo/Game Freak/TPCi are too touchy about putting death in American films. It's RARE - the Lati@s storyline required it. I know the idea of death is explored in the manga but I just really, really doubt that goes down.
The rumors I have heard are that Mewtwo gets a new form. "You don't know the REAL Mewtwo!" being the end text of the Japanese trailer seems to support this. Why would they go through the trouble of crafting a new form for Mewtwo if they're going to kill him off?
π: 0 β©: 1
BlondBeastBoy In reply to MewtwoStruckBack [2013-03-12 00:31:19 +0000 UTC]
The REAL Mewtwo would be what his PokeDex entry states: he's vicious, cold-hearted and has a liking on defeating his foes. He thinks Genesect is his enemy, and thus needs to exterminate him. That's my theory, though.
Also, how about Charizard's return? I like that even though it's still the 5th generation era two 1st gen Pokemon (Charizard and Dragonite) still prove that the old timers can put out a great battle, even if N had to interfere. I hate this whole "friendship" concept; Charizard had the upper hand in that battle and Dragonite was about to push daisies. Another pet peeve was that Charizard no longer knows Seismic Toss.

MewtwoStruckBack In reply to BlondBeastBoy [2013-03-12 00:55:35 +0000 UTC]
The Pokedex entry is outdated. Mewtwo Returns is canon to Mewtwo's character and it removes that aspect of him. The manga is considered a separate canon but still valued by the creators of the series, and he is not evil there either.
I'm pretty sure that this movie will eradicate any remaining traces of "Mewtwo's supposed to be evil" that are left within the Pokemon fandom. It should, anyway.
I'm lurking most of the Pokemon sources right now to get info so I did see a bit about the Charizard/Dragonite fight. It'll be interesting to see what all happens on the massive nostalgia trip.

BlondBeastBoy In reply to MewtwoStruckBack [2013-03-12 01:22:53 +0000 UTC]
I never said he was still evil, but what I meant is that he'll probably be true to his nature by being vicious toward Genesect. My bad for spoiling the fight between the dragons though, although it's now all over Youtube. Charizard and Mewtwo's returns got me back into Pokemon one more time.

I read the lastest comission from JHALL.
I think you are being ridiculous about wanting to change a Pokemon's nature. Of course it's roll of the dice. Pokemon are supposed to be like animals, like living creatures. You can't control someone or something else's personality/nature without unethical means. The players are to see Pokemon are living crearures to be respected. Not machines. Why do you think they'vebeen grinding the theme "Pokemon are NOT tools of war" since the first game?
To forcibly change a Pokemon's nature would be changing how it is.
And how would you accomplish changing it's nature, in-game? What logic would they use? A laser?
While it can be frustrating not getting a Pokemon with a nature you want, it has to be taken with a grain of salt and patience.
There are breeding techniques and cature techinques that can be used to catch a Pokemon with a specific nature (ie. Having the mother with the preferred nature hold an Everstone. Or in capture have a Pokemon with Sychronize go into they front of the Party).
We have to learn to love all Pokemon for who they are and find ways to work around their weaknesses. I'm sure you'll understand how we must love Pokemon from the weakest Rattata to the mighty Mewtwo.

BlondBeastBoy In reply to CourierBell [2013-04-03 15:02:10 +0000 UTC]
I have a problem with their nature. When you capture a usually savage Pokemon, having them with a "jolly" nature like Mewtwo isn't exactly how one imagines him to be.

May I say that I've JUST now gotten the chance to get into Pokemon, and Mewtwo is my favorite hands-down? X3
(I agree with the Nuzlocke stuff, by the way.... Once I get the game (I've only played Fire Red on a friend's Gameboy... and then I watched both of the Mewtwo movies and read some of the manga XD) I want to do a Nuzlocke, too... But I probably'll skip the legendary rules'n'junk and make it more of a story XD)

As a heads-up, there ARE no true "Legendary" rules. The only two bona fide rules are "first encounter only" and "permabox or release if fainted." You can Repel your way to Mewtwo and catch him and it would still be legitimate per the "official" rules.
