# About me

I don't edit or enhance any of my photography.... only the occasional crop...

This is partly because I think if a picture turns out well it should be of its own accord, not because someone messed with it until it looked good.... *Editing an already good picture is ok, and yes, I know people will disagree with me so don't shout at me in a comment, thanks

This is also partly because I am dumb when it comes to technology and working said technology... :)

Favourite genre of music: Anything except country and rap

Hey...
Sorry I didn’t reply you, cold grabbed me wildly, so I was barely here and didn't notice…
You asked about music, but it’s not an easy one for me…beside Apo, I listen to whatever I can lay my hands (ears ) on, so that would be a pretty long list.
Lately, beside mentioned band, I seam to often spin Rachmaninov cello/piano works, but that is a daily thing…tomorrow, it would probably be something else, day after that a new thing and so on…
Just now, I listen something different…The Phantom of the Opera
I just adore this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-15 06:10:43 +0000 UTC]

Thats no problem at all. I hope you're feeling better. I'm trying not to get sick but unfortunately I keep thinking that its warmer than it actually is outside...
Rachmaninov is good but I haven't heard much of his work. I have no idea how much classical music you've listened to, but these are a few of my favorites if you'd like to try something new(er): Brahms Double concerto
Sibelius Violin concerto
Berlioz Symphony Fantastique (probably as close to an acid trip as you will get in classical music )
any Mahler or Shostakovich <3
Dvorak, Schumann, and Elgar cello concertos
Faure Requiem- Libera Me (absolutely gorgeous Baritone solo)
Corigliano's "Red Violin" concerto <3
Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade
Stravinsky Firebird or Rite of Spring
If you're in an... odd mood, may I recommend Bartok String Quartet No. 3 or Schoenberg Pierrot Lunaire or Verklarte Nacht
Call me a music nerd, i know i am, but i could go on forever!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-15 15:33:47 +0000 UTC]

No, no, no...not a music nerd, this list you gave me is great...
Shostakovich! I just adore Shostakovich...the intesity, the power...it crush you, then turns you back to life.
And Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade! It is such a treat!
I also love Brahms and Sibelius and Dvorak...
For some reason I'm not particular fan of Schumann (so silly when said like that), just because it tends to go too "sweet" for me, but the rest you mentioned...
I can't believe how much of the music taste we share!
In this moment, I'm making some church related paintings, so mostly listen a church music (baroque and gregorian chants). My sister just yeasterday gave me Radu Marian's cd with "Ave Maria" on it...I thought I would die. Bach and Gounod both probably dreamt about voice like that performing it.

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-16 05:05:10 +0000 UTC]

ah.... I'm not that big into choir stuff but I performed with my school's choir 3 years in a row for their big yearly concert. I do happen to be a cellist. We did Rutter Requiem (a good modern version of the requiem, esp. the 2nd movement. BIG cello solo), Bach's Cantata 'Christ Lag In Todesbanden, and Faure Requiem. Those might be good things if you're working on church related things.
Its so awesome to find someone who shares my taste in music! BTW, Golijov is interesting. You'd probably like it. not church-y though...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-16 17:22:14 +0000 UTC]

I'm not into choirs either, all thought I also performed (voice) in one, during school (all this coincidence makes me smile).
I don't happen to consider myself a choir singer (with time, my alto moved further and even I can still sing high, I normaly sing close to Ville Valo from HIM (can cover his voice any time) or even deeper sometimes, so..) and with a most of the time used on my work, that's past.
When I said I listen to church music I referred on Bach and similar particularly, not choirs (I don't like classic church choirs, accept gospel and as I already said, Gregorian chants, but only some).
As I'm currently entangled to finish some religious art for a local religious society (sadly, this wont show up here, as it's impossible to photograph), I'm lingering on that kind of music (today, it was over and over Vavilov's "Ave Maria by Caccini" (always makes me laugh to think of his mischief’s))...but only few days more (I think Monday will be a finishing day) and I can return to my usual...hope to start some canvas on Monday/Tuesday, closer to my favorite themes, so it will be something different from then on. Maybe I start with Golijev, as you recommended

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-18 05:43:18 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I understand. Ville has a gorgeous voice though, or maybe thats just me...
I get it now. Choirs, as long as they're singing a more traditional (or traditional sounding) song remind me of churches. I don't know why, they just do. Definitely check out Golijov, especially the 'Last Round' for 2 quartets and string bass.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-19 02:34:44 +0000 UTC]

Ville does have a gorgeous voice and is one of my favorite music performers, but when it comes to my own performance and a voice depth...well, you got it. Not that I would change it for a world, so it's all right
Back to choirs, as I said, I'm not into such music as well. Don't know why...maybe too stiff, if you know what I mean. Maybe just bad memories
Anyhow, I will check Golijov, for sure...as I officially finished the work I mentioned a day earlier (what day I had...my back falling apart), I'm free as a bird. Will take a day off tomorrow and will experiment with music, so I'll let you know how his music worked for me. Sure hope I'll like it

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-20 02:14:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, one of my sketches waited long enough, so hopefully, I'll start tomorrow. It's something that crossed my mind while I read Neil Gaiman's stuff (my favorite living writer), and then, again, returned, while I recently re-read (for Gods know which time) "Mirror in the Mirror" by Michael Ende. It'll be oil painting and hopefully, good enough to be included in my next exhibition (cross my fingers).
But wouldn't like to jinx it, so I'll stop talking about it, until it's actually finished...will post it here when finish.
Meanwhile, I do some drawings and some digital art/photomanipulation. It will soon be here, too. In other words, busy
Couldn’t find the time (talking about a day off ) to check on your music recommendations, will do it tonight, and let you know...
By the way, I checked some of your new stuff...if continues like this, half of your gallery will end up in my favorites...but I just can't resist

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-20 03:00:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for all the faves! Sounds like you have some good places to start. Neil Gaiman is good, I havn't read much of his stuff though. What do you like of his?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-21 00:37:06 +0000 UTC]

As I said, Gaiman is my favorite living writer, so you imagine I read almost everything he ever wrote (even some less orthodox stuff ). I like it all (it seams his style suits me perfectly) but most "American Gods", "Good Omens" (with Terry Pratchet) and "Coraline"...but, stop me while it's possible, I could talk about this for hours.
You didn't quite prepared me for Golijov...I adore "Last Round", it's incredible and I'm thankful to you for the rest of my life to push me in direction of his works. Even I heard of him before, I was too busy to find the time and check it, and besides, one gets interest for so many things and rarely gets the time to check it all...without you, who knows when (or even if) would I discovered him
Sometimes, I think, there's too much of stuff we would like and never have a chance to see/hear/read, etc. World is too big, too wide and we are forced to "comb" it piece by piece...no "Google" in real life to help
So advices of this type are priceless things...thanks again

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-21 02:04:11 +0000 UTC]

My mom read American Gods and I LOVED Good Omens. I've read Stardust and liked it so much better than the movie (though the movie was good) and once I finish Clockwork Orange I'll start up Neverwhere. Coraline looked interesting too but I haven't picked it up yet...
You're more than welcome for that. It really is a pity to know that one will never get to know all that we want to.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-21 02:22:57 +0000 UTC]

Newerwhere...scratch everything I said, if I would have to choose, Neverwhere is probably the first on my list...or it's a dead fight with "American Gods" however different it might be. If you wanna my advice, try "Coraline" first...it's shorter, lighter and it's a helluva fun/scary book
As we are on the book themes, did you ever read Zelazny's works? Just a question popped in my mind, as we seam to share similar tastes on some subjects...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-21 02:34:41 +0000 UTC]

I might do that.... I've never heard of Zelazny. What kind of books are they?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-21 03:06:58 +0000 UTC]

Roger Zelazny wrote SF/fantasy books...you maybe heard of "The Chronicles of Amber"? These are his most famous books, and I love it, but I even more love his "Creatures of Light And Darkness", which is not part of "Chronicles". And yet, my sig is from another of his books, "Isle of the Dead "…yeah, I’m fan.
In short, if SF and fantasy ever had a child, it's Zelazny...he is a perfect cross between those genres, and on a side, you have a bunch of mythology interpreted on his own way, to go with. Here's a wiki, so I don't bother you:
[link]
If you're interested, do check it, would like to hear what you think
I will be rude and ask another similar question...did you read books of Michael Ende or E.T.A. Hoffman (completely different genres)? I think the last one almost certainly must suit to the person playing cello and loving Apo...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-21 03:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Those look interesting. I'm quite interested in Greek/Roman and Egyptian mythology. Might have to check those out too....
I've never heard of those two authors either. I haven't been able to read for pleasure much in the past few years. I would have liked to, but didn't have the time.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-23 06:06:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know what is like to be busy and not having time for reading (or anything else ).
Well, when you find the time, try Zelazny, he twists mythologies his own way and creates genre for itself.
As you love music and like dark, I really recommend Hoffmann too, he's stories are quite unique and special, only the language can be a bit hard to fallow (he was German and lived in 18th century).
His works are early gothic, but also often speaks of music or philosophy (his own view, of course). Especially, I recommend “The Sandman” (Der Sandmann), it’s my favorite story of him, his version of German children (and horror) story of the same name. Also, if you can find, don’t miss “Kreisleriana” and “Councilor Krespel”…you are musician, you’ll certainly find a point in these.
This is me, but when I want to indulge myself, usually there’s nothing better then sitting close to fireplace with book of Hoffmann stories, Apo in the background and (this I don’t recommend, but everyone have he’s/her’s poison) five-piece package of cherry-brandy chocolates. Ah, heaven.

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-23 21:56:15 +0000 UTC]

hmmm... I think i shall...
I agree, i like relaxing with a good book, but sometimes a good movie is nice. And even though i guess it would technically be 'work' instead of leisure I like playing my cello to relax or let out emotion or stuff like that... quite useful if you're angry or sad

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-25 03:46:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, I suppose, it's like when I take painting and drawing to relax (which I do, all the time), from painting and drawing for a living.
Guess we're both kinda lucky to have something we really love for our "jobs" too
And, yeah, I agree...good movies=good books (and good comics, too), I make no difference or discrimination between. What's your favorite genre/movie or movies...
And please, tell you like Tim Burton...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-25 06:07:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm a firm believer that in most book-to-movie deals, the movie isn't quite as good as the book. Though they usually come fairly close at least. I really like suspense movies, not horror, suspense. I'm a BIG fan of Hitchcock's movies. Comedy/romantic comedy too. I don't like sad movies or crying in a theater so I tend to avoid those. Though I did see The Notebook and liked it, I was misty eyed by the end. Action is good and so is SciFi. I'm really not picky about movies. Sports ones are kind of boring, they all tend to have the same plot, and real life movies aren't great either.
I've seen some Burton movies and I like his style. Offbeat and a little creepy... but from what i've seen he's good. I wouldn't say i'm obsessed with his movies though, I think i've only seen any of them once.
You obviously like him, what other genres/movies do you like?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-26 02:32:59 +0000 UTC]

No, I didn’t said right…I didn’t meant books to movies adaptations (which are too often very poorly/bad done), but I meant to say I love books and movies equally and just can’t understand when some people claim book more intellectually valuable than movies. There are such masterpieces in both fields, equally worth…it’s stupid to put one art over the other. It’s like photography had to fight with paintings…just dumb.
As on movies, my favorites are Blade Runner, SW, Dunes, Labyrinth, Matrix, Dark City, City of the Lost Children, Sleepy Hollow and so on…beside SF/fantasy, I love comedies too, but mostly from eighties and nineties, cause I found newer often too shallow…still there’s some, of course. Romantic comedy is not my genre, but I love few, like “While you were sleeping” and “Happy, Texas”. My favorite comedies in general are “The Birdcage”, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, “Clue”, “Noises Off…”, “Without a Clue”, “Spaceballs”, “Haunted Honeymoon” and so on (not to tire you ) I also love suspense movies, my favorite from Hitchcock is “Vertigo”.
In general, I love movies and that’s that…can watch any genre, can like any too. My collection has over 800 movies of all genres, so you can imagine.
One of my favorite movies of all times is “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, movie of all genres by my opinion. Have you ever watched it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelancholySoundtrack In reply to Maylar [2009-01-26 03:09:15 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember what i was thinking when i wrote that. This weekend's been really crazy.... I think i understood what you said but just decided to put that anyway...? maybe? who know... i don't.
Blade Runner is good, and the Matrix. And While You Were Sleeping is cute. Nice list of comedies too Vertigo is awesome! Though I like the dream sequences Dali did for Spellbound. You just can't really go wrong with Hitchcock.
I love movies, i just never really go to the theater (because its too expensive) or rent and I don't buy any either... I've never seen that one... but then again there are lots of good movies i haven't seen.
One of my favorites is The Princess Bride, or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I quote the lines along with the movies either out loud or in my head every time i watch them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to MelancholySoundtrack [2009-01-28 05:45:06 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I love "Princess Bride", especially Inigo
HGTTG is also one of better movies from last few years.
Yeah, I quote along too...mostly, in my head, but two or tree times it happened I spit the next line in the movie aloud and half of other viewers turn to me with big frowns on their faces. So from then, I watch movies with my hands over my mouth
I rarely go to theater myself, tickets ARE too expensive and beside, I like my privacy at home more (especially since my sister bought me a popcorn popper ). Still, big screen is a special experience, so I’m kinda trying to save my money (fat chances, but still a wish) for my own big screen/home theater system. Maybe, one day, if I cross my fingers really hard...

Also, there is a certain pleasure in watching it that way...
"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya..." ...ah, that brings back some good memories
