Yo Maxx I was speaking to you earlier on playstation Playroom where the guy was fixing his Bullseye rig. Hopefully you'll remember but I was wondering what got you started. What helped you to build your art to how it is now and what books or comics or person did you have to help you draw to how you draw now? NYTZ_MAN87 add me on psn bro

I just REALLY like drawing and being creative. i sketch constantly. I did comics for a bit, then kept it up and was asked to be a concept artist in games. I liked 3D so i taught myself how to do it and went from there. 2D wise, i am a comic guy, there are staples, Gil Elvgren, Leyendecker, Rockwell, but mostly, I love the Joe Mads, the romitas, etc. 3D... anything and everything... there is so much good out there. I hope that helps.

Prismacolor, tria, and copic. I am cheap, so whatever I see laying about, I grab and use. My preference is prismacolor. They blend beautifully. Thanks!!!

My friend Caryn told me that I should check out your deviantart page, and I did. I'm very, very impressed by your work. I am also an illustrator, but it would take me a thousand years to get to this level. ^__^

I too have a friend named Caryn... I wwonder if it's the same person... Does your Caryn have red eyes, fangs, dress all gothy and hang around with moderate to great artists who appreciate the wonderful things you've said?!? If so, then she's mine... and you canna have her... All kidding aside, thank you kindly for your words and morale boost!

Judging by her recent Facebook pics, yes. caryn told me to come and look at your art when I was skyping with her on Saturday. I guess i should thank you for the morale boost as well. i read your journal entry about pain and art. It amazes me that someone as talented as you feels that sort of pain. I die inside every time someone hates something I do, so I could totally relate.

we just need to stop being crippled by the pain of rejection. it's one of those things i figured on years ago and it's helped me move beyond some of my much more artisticallilly talented friends. rejection is something everyone gets, even if you don't see it face to face. I was recentky on the bus with my Blizzard shirt a three guys from the university asked about my art (I draw on the bus... a lot...). the guys looked through my sketchbook and one commented on Blizzard. We talked about it for a bit until one bluntly said,"I don't play WoW. The graphics are not next gen and i don't care for them..." i just sat and let him vent. I explained the reason for the lack of next gen and after he understood, pointed out the successes of WoW not only monetarily but as a well loved project that was unleashed to critical acclaim. after our dialogue, he has come to chat with me on the bus more than his friends. Either that or turn up your nose, throw royaly money at him and disappear like Batman... I prefere to meet my detractors head on and discuss their hate... because then i grow... and hopefully they do as well...

I agree completely. I used to let it stifle my creativity. I had a friend in 10th grade who told me I was rubbish. She started out being a fan of mine, and then she just turned and said "you suck, I hate you, you should feel bad for being terrible" (not exactly in those words). It killed me and destroyed my creativity for a long time. Luckily, I've finally risen above it. Still hurts when someone doesn't like something you put your blood, sweat and tears into, but not as much.
I also had a situation with something I did for Media Molecule called Hansel and Gretelbot. I BLED to make that project a reality. I worked on it with Grant, Caryn, James, Sean, and a few others. We had a lot of things go wrong with the project, and we did our best, but the limitations of the beta caused some things not to be so perfect. And the fans, when it came out, were of two minds. They were either "This is AMAZING" or "You guys are the best creators in the game and THIS is the best you could do? YOU ALL SUCK". I actually did a similar thing to you, I would go to the haters and explain to them WHY some things weren't perfect. How our levels broke when they were brought into the actual game, how people got taken away from the project and how we had a deadline.
A lot of the people I did that to ended up following me on twitter and I speak with them daily. that approach seems much better than my usual run and hide in my basement, wondering why someone hates something that I care so much about.
Some days I let it get to me, others, I really just try to rise above.
thanks for that, Maxx. You're really cool and nice. I'm glad to see someone understands what it means to be an artist.

Aw no problem. You're just like real world good. All the things I strive for you've got down pact. It's cool to see. It's like no matter what you draw it's better than most of what I see on dA. Rendering ability is nothing without drawing skill.
