My DA name is an Algonquian word. There's other spellings for it(most Native's languages were never meant to be written so spellings vary), but in short it means Wolf. It is one of my Nation's clans which is the one I am from.

I'm from the Menominee Nation in Wisconsin. One of the very few Nations who actually live in their original locations before the Removal and Westward expansion of the settlers.

Oh I just think it would be cool to learn more about the tribes in general. I hope I don't sound like a horrible yokel. But y'know, I'm one of those weird kinda people who listens to public radio on purpose just because I like learning new things and exposing myself to different cultures.

But yeah, oral tradition, makes sense... I mean, same is true I'm sure of ancient Egypt prior to the invention of papyrus -- they may have had writing, but if it has to be carved into a stone wall that's kind of inconvenient for the average Joe. And it makes sense that the spellings would vary because the Arabic character set was invented for a totally different set of languages (Latin roots) and now you're just trying to shoehorn the words from the other language into a character set that was never meant for them. The same thing happens with Asian and middle-eastern names and words. Look at how many different spellings the news media have come up with for Moamar Kadaffi.

Is it also difficult to explain how to pronounce it correctly? I get that because of things like the Moai on Easter Island and we westerners naturally want to say "mow-eye" because that's what we're used to that spelling meaning when it comes to us from Japan... but in the dialects from the pacific islands its actually "mow-uh-i" (short-i sound), which is hellishly difficult for us Americans to pronounce properly. Or that volcano in Iceland where nobody in the news media here could figure out how to pronounce it.

Anyway, I read this article on Wikipedia about the Menominee tribe. [link] Some cool stuff in there... some crappy stuff too, but I guess that's life... and it's not like any of us don't know what the settlers did. And as much as I dislike Nixon, I do occasionally hear something cool about him, and I think it's cool that he signed the bill that reinstated the reservation (even though he probably had little to do with it). Also I think it's really cool that they've managed to keep the language alive. I know a lot of the First Nations languages have dried up and pretty much disappeared from the earth, which is kind of a shame I think, particularly given the lack of written record. I mean, Latin may be a dead language (and for good reason, sheesh), but that hasn't stopped anyone from using it.

Anyway, yeah, umm... I'm not really looking for you to give me a big brain dump or anything, but I just think it's cool to have friends from different places and learn things about their heritage and culture.

Oh hey... if you'd be interested I think it might be cool to do some comics about the First Nations tribes... I've got a couple of ideas that have been in my list for a while. One of them I'm a little concerned might be considered offensive, so it'd be cool if I could run it by you. But if you're interested I think it'd be cool to collaborate on writing some comics about the First Nations. I like it when I can both be funny and be educational at the same time.

It is sort of a hard way to try to explain how to pronounce it. But the closest way to explain is: Ma-way- he-ew. There's certain breath intakes with the -whaew part.

There's pros and cons to the reservations.

As for the comic idea, it be fun. Note me on what you had in mind.
