I've taken your advice and ordered a Wacom Intuos Pro Large.  I resisted going all the way to a Cintiq (or whatever it's called), still being a bit cautious until I have more experience with Wacom.   I understand uses a Cintiq professionally.

Many thanks for the advice, and I'll let you know how it works out.

My Wacom tablet arrived today, late in the afternoon.  I am both excited and intimidated.   This is an awkward time for me, because of the weather here, but I will see what progress I can make tomorrow morning.  It appears I ordered the wireless option, so will have an initial delay for charging the battery.    Maybe it will be like my wireless keyboard and mouse -- at first I was always careful to turn them off when I shut down, but now just leave them always on, and nevertheless the batteries last for months.

Hi. Good!
Well, if that can reassure you, I haven't really started using my tablet as a daily tool. In the last week I used it no more than 3 times. But I am starting to see how I can gain draw comfort from it, in Inkscape, Gimp and Blender.
Don't worry, thoses things take time to be adopted.

golem1 In reply to Ludo38 [2014-01-28 08:28:02 +0000 UTC]

It seems the weather isn't going to be as bad as previously expected, so maybe I can make better progress.

I find that a CD comes with the tablet.  Did you find you needed anything from the the CD?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ludo38 In reply to golem1 [2014-01-28 15:53:48 +0000 UTC]

Ah, the thing is that I work on Linux, and the softwares in the CD are ot Linux-friendly, so I didn't installed them. But the tablet works fine just plugged in. Ubuntu finds it immediately, it's ready to use.

golem1 In reply to Ludo38 [2014-01-29 05:08:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, that has not been my experience.

I also did not install anything from the CD, because I was pretty sure they would not be Linux-friendly.

I connected the tablet to a USB port and booted up Linux.  Some indicators on the tablet lit up, so I know it was getting power.   But no applications I tried responded to any of the buttons on the tablet, or to the stylus.  Which applications did you try?

Inkscape, Blender and Krita.
How is it going now ? Did it worked finally ?
Maybe the compatibility varies depending on the tablet version...

golem1 In reply to Ludo38 [2014-01-30 22:27:21 +0000 UTC]

Finally got back to work on it, now that the weather is better.  Still not working.   I think you're right, it depends on tablet version. I have Intuos Pro Large.  I've seen posts by one or two others with similar models and they, too, are seeing similar symptoms: LED's light up, but otherwise no response.   I suspect I may have some work ahead of me -- recompiling drivers and such.  I've not had to do such things in Ubuntu before, so I have much to learn, and frankly not sure where to start.  I've tried Blender and Inkscape and MyPaint, not familar with Krita.   MyPaint has trouble even with normal keyboard/mouse interface.  Just drawing random lines, the line drawn is offset from where the cursor on the screen would lead one to expect.

I'm not really discouraged.  This gives me a reason to learn things I've put off learning for far too long.

But I'm a bit down at the moment for another reason altogether.  I was trying to help someone using the Windows version of GIMP, but it turns out the Windows version currently available is crippled compared to the Linux version.  It can't dock dialogs to the tool window.   There seem to be other ways to do what they need to do, but much weaker and maybe not really sufficient.  I used the Windows version for years, and it was fine back then, but no longer.    I don't know why.  Maybe somebody has made a misguided attempt to make GIMP more "user friendly" and thereby screwed it up.     This possibility raises a cosmic sort of angst -- I need to insulate myself from that sort of problem, and I think it's possible theoretically,  but not sure I can crank up the motivation any longer, I'm just too old....

Updating:  Went through recommended procedure to update wacom driver from repositories.  Not done yet because along the way it decided to update the entire Ubuntu distro.   Will continue along that trail.

Slight detour to another ongoing project, getting a Raspberry Pi computer working.   I ordered it from a supplier in the UK, so the power supply plug was made for Brit outlets.  So I ordered a UK/US adapter.  That arrived yesterday, and there was a bit to do, to make the adapter work.   Ready to take the next step on that also.

Superbowl tomorrow.  That will slow me down yet again....

Thanks   Yes, this too shall pass...

Who knows, maybe with the next regular update, the driver I need may be included by default.  Not really counting on that, but it's not impossible.   Or it may be that because I ordered a unit with wifi capability, it's just not supposed to work without it.
