Well lets see... When you recolor Kirby sprites, its best that you keep the original shading. By that I mean, instead of recoloring everything just one solid color, do also of the shading that was already here in the first place. You can find a variety of tutorials on how to do basic recoloring around the internet.

By looking at your work I think the problem is not your shading, its your recoloring. You don't seen to know the basic of recoloring sprites, which is something that tempt to happen with a lot of beginners who decide to "learn by themselves" without even trying to learn the basics from tutorials.
