I'm doing well, thanks. The results from the EU referendum have me a little concerned though.
How are you doing? did you have a great birthday?

That is good to hear.

I can imagine. I'm guess you were not pro-Brexit or however it is called? On the bright side you won't have either Trump or Hillary as your next president.Β

I did have a good birthday. Went out for dinner/bowling with friends, and my lab got me a card they all signed and a balloon Β

Other than that I have been doing okay. I found out I have a large cyst on my ovary that needs to be surgically removed in two weeks so that has me a little stressed out. I have been trying to work hard in the lab and come in on weekends to try to get as much done before I have to spend time recovering. Lots of other stuff been happening in my life that has kept me busy, but most of it has been good expect that.Β

How have things been for you?Β

sphinxgal1 In reply to KrazyKristian92 [2016-07-06 17:51:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Like most people In my country I voted to stay. The thing is the whole referendum isn't really a legal binding thing. It's all up to the politicians in the end...but considering all of them have decided to retire including the Prime Minister....just sitting back and waiting for Nicola Sturgeon to call for another Scottish Independence referendum. ...*sarcastic Yay*....

This is true. Pretty much both our countries are fucked.

That was really nice of them! Glad you had a great birthday.

I have another friend who alsoΒ  has an Ovary Cyst. What happened with her was that she tried to alert her doctor that her birth control pills were giving her 2 periods a month. The guy pretty much ignored her an now she has a cyst. I hope you both get them removed smoothly and with an easy recovery. it sounds very unpleasant.

At the moment I'm trying to support one of my friends though a bad break up. Recently he made the big decision to get a sex change, which his girlfriend wasn't very comfortable with. To an extent I can kind of see things from her perspective...but I honestly don't see what the big deal it. He will still be the same person and if you really love eachother does gender really matter. The whole process is going to be tough on him and he'll need allot of support to get through it. I think she still wants to remain friends with him as she suggested they be friends with benefits....it's a shame they couldn't work things out, especially since he is still in love with her....

Was the vote close? I have not been following the news as much as I should. I live in bubble with everything going on at the moment.Β

In Florida we had tropical storm Colin come through and the Hospital I work at sent out alerts to leave as soon as possible to avoid the storm. My boss even came in and was like "You can go home if you want. Everyone is leaving." The thing was I had an experiment that took multiple days to complete, and I didn't look at the weather to plan ahead and I did not want to start it over so I just stayed in the building watching the storm go by and kept doing research like "meh, whatever." As a native you have a sense of when shit is about to really go down.

I'm not looking forward to the end of this election. Part of me would like another party besides the Democrats or Republicans to win, but I know that will not happen.Β

I imagine she will be getting her's removed as well? I hope everything goes smoothly for her too. I also had trouble getting mine diagnosed. I went to multiple doctors and they all kept telling me I just had an infection. The kept testing for BV and STIs thinking either of those was causing pelvic inflammatory disease because I kept getting cramping between periods. I did not have any blood fortunately. Eventually I went to the women's health clinic on campus, and they did an exam and noticed a lump. Originally they wanted to just give me antibiotics again, but I refused to take them unless I was able to get an ultrasound. They tried to use scare tactics like "We will have to right down that you are refusing treatment and if you don't treat PID early you can lose fertility, etc.." and I had to explain I wasn't refusing treatment but wanted to test out every possibility. Also I said I was concerned because I work at a cancer center. Of course it turned out to be a cyst. I also decided to name the teratoma Bobby

I am sorry about your other friends, and I hope they find happiness. That is a tough scenario. My sister is gay and dated a transgendered woman. There were a lot of unhealthy things about their relationship, but my sister mentioned that she had trouble with sexual attraction at times because she explained that deep down she was attracted to women. She thought after the break up that part of the problems that they had may have been based on that.

I find it hard to make up my mind on those kind of issues as a cis-gendered person. Perhaps I am not entitled to an opinion. Like you said as long as you love the person as an individual it should not matter; however, there is also the argument that people do not choose their sexuality (hetero, homo, bi, etc) and it is hard wired into a person. Thus, how do you love a person as an individual regardless of their sex/gender if you are born to like a particular sex/gender.Β

For me I always wondered if some people's gender/sexual orientation can either change (or stay fixed) throughout their lifetime based on environmental/biochemical factors. It's a hard topic.Β

sphinxgal1 In reply to KrazyKristian92 [2016-07-10 11:07:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was a really close vote. About 49% voted to sat, whereas 51% voted to leave.

Haha, I guess since tropical storms are common in Florida you're just so used to them that you can pretty much tell the ones that aren't really a big deal to the ones that you need to go into lock down for. What is the experiment that you are working on?

Yeah, I head back from her just recently. She said that it went away on it's own so it mustn't have been all that bad. Good grief! What's with doctors over there? If you're experiencing pain like that then wouldn't it make sense to get the ultrasound first just to rule out a worst case scenario like a cancerous tumor? Misdiagnosing illnesses is a HUGE no-no in the medical world after all. I hope you get the chance to yell at those guys "you were WRONG!, motherfucker!".
If you get to keep it, Bobby will be one hell of a conversation starter

That is a really good point. There are so many theories about sexuality. personally i like to think that you fall in love with the person, however I could be wrong.
I like your theory about the nature of sexuality changing throughout a person's lifetime. i wonder if anyone will take on the research.

Recently one of the managers in the office attended a conference on Alzeimers & Dementia at a University in Edinburgh. It should have been really interesting, however the researchers were pretty disgraceful.Β  They openly claimed that they didn't get anyone with these neurodegenerative diseases involved in the research whatsoever, claiming that they wouldn't understand. The manager who attended the conference has been working with people with these illnesses for MANY years, we even have a service that specializes in Dementia, so from her perspective this would have been really insulting (especially since her mother has Dementia). I don't really see how you can conduct research on neurological illnesses without working alongside people that actually have that illness. I remember she was also saying that halfway through they showed a picture of a map of Canada. This is because they originally intended to do research on the native people of Canada, when they couldn't get the funding they decided to work on Dementia instead.

KrazyKristian92 In reply to sphinxgal1 [2016-07-10 13:57:26 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that is very close! I always wondered if having those things to require a 2/3 majority vote would be better so you avoid a scenario were half of the people who voted disagreed. Oh well, what can you do. Like you said it is all up to the politicians now.Β

Most of the time we just have "Hurricane parties" when that shit happens lol. It like we make up for all the snow days we don't get here.Β

I'm not sure what's going on besides they just want to peddle out drugs like snake oil. This is the second time I have gotten into a heated discussion with a doctor about my health. The first was when I had the E. coli. You really have to be your own advocate when it comes to your medical treatment here otherwise you can end up with unnecessary treatment. All I can say is thank God I wasn't some shy person who didn't know any better and just went along with it. You should be able to talk with your doctor and feel comfortable with your treatment.Β

That is great for your friend. A lot of the simple the "simple" cyst that are small will just go away on their own. Unfortunately the type mine is usually has hair, teeth, and bone growing in it so I imagine it is hard for the body to clear that out on it's own rather than it just being fluid filled. It is also 7.5x6x4cm so it is a pretty good size. After 5cm they usually do surgical removal, so I won't get to keep Bobby. My surgery is schedule for the 18th Β

It is funny though, when I met with the surgeon my sister and nephew came with. I had mentioned to my sister that these thing scan grow teeth and said it would be cool to keep them. When I got in there and we looked at the MRI images, the surgeon said mine might have teeth. My sister instantly piped up and said "my sister wants to keep the teeth." My surgeon's response was "... okay then." Β

Yeah I was introduced to that concept when I took a gender studies class as an undergrad. We were assigned to read sci-fi books that had a gender component in them and present the ideas. One girl presented a book in which the sex/sexual orientation of the aliens changed could change throughout their life time. It was a neat concept.Β

I can't imagine that flying in my field. It would be like "We tested a drug meant for leukemia in clinical trials, but we only treated patients with lung cancer." Now occasionally a treatment is repurposed for different cancers because it works in multiple types of diseases, but you have to have a solid reason for doing so. Sounds like these people didn't have their shit together.Β

SORRY ABOUT THE LATE REPLY!!!!

What kinds of things do you do at a hurricane party?

As it turns out, here in the UK our doctors aren't any better. One of the girls in the office told me about a manager, who unfortionaly lost her son to a misdiagnosis. They had been treating him for migraines for quite some time, but the thing is this pain was far beyond what you would have expected for a migraine, like he had days where he couldn't move because of the pain. Eventually they got him in for a scan. They had literally strapped him down but the overhead lights triggered a seizure. it wasn't until they got him in the operating room that they found out that he had a tumor. He died not long after surgery. His mother says that this has ruined her life.

I'm glad to hear your surgery went well. Did they let you keep the teeth? it's really interesting that cysts can grow hair and teeth, do you know why?

Do you remember the titles of any of those books? i'd like to give them a read at some point
Have you read any light novels? If not I recommend the Black Bullet series. It's a sci-fi series centered around a the world being over run by a virus that mutates anything that comes into contact with it. Unlike most series of the genre, it is set at a point where humanity isn't on the brink of extinction, it is infact trying to function as normally while trying to keep the virus at bay.

IT'S OKAY!!! Β

Mostly just eat junk food and play some kind of game (cards, board games, etc) till the power comes back on. If you do have power, watch the news and laugh or watch a movie. We loved watching the movie Clue. People have their own traditions though. I think most just drink through the storm.Β

Sadly there was no teeth It did have hair and small fragments of bone according to the report I just got from the pathology lab they sent the sample out to. I really wanted those damn teeth. Also I got the dimension for the size and weight (6x4x3cm and 64 grams). I even have high definition photos of the sucker. I guess I won't put that on my fridge, my roommate might not appreciate that. There are a mixture of cell types in dermoid cyst/mature teratomas, so when I was developing as an embryo one of the cells that has the potential to turn into other cells (like stem cells) got trapped in my ovary and started developing later on in life. It's still not clear why exactly this happens.Β

I haven't read a lot of light novels. That sounds like it would be a good series to pick up, and it's nice to see a little less post-apocalyptic stuff.Β

I did finally watch Gurren Lagann recently that I enjoyed. Also Zankyou no Terror about two young geniuses that are terrorist in Japan.

Unfortunately it has been so long since I took the course I no longer remember the names or have the course information I remember readying the Forever War which had a twist at the end of what would happen in the future for the role of gender/sexual orientation/reproduction/etc and it had Mechas at the beginning. Stick it on DA! I'd like to see what bobby looks like

What did you think of Gurren Lagann? No matter how many times i watch it, i still cry a little over Kamina, not as much as I do with Hughes though. Colonel Hughes' death is still one of the most traumatic in anime history. It was just made all the sadder with his daughter not understanding death as a concept.
I haven't heard of Zankyou no Terror so i'll have a look out for it

That sounds really interesting, i'll make a note of it and look for it next time i'm in the book shop.

LOL! I think it might get flagged if I do that. I'm personally not embarrassed by it (because for me its just an organ), but I can imagine some people might get freaked out by it. Maybe better for PM lol. You are the second friend who has wanted to see it. But it was pretty cool to see him. The photo shows my uterus from the top so you can compare the size of one ovary to the other. It looks HUGE by comparison, but it wasn't all that big.Β

I honestly loved it. The characters were charming, the soundtrack was great, and the plot was good. For me it started off looking like the plot was going to be very simple, but it escalated quickly. Especially at the end when you have multiple dimensions, the power of the spiral, and mecha fights in space lol. I was sad to see Kamina go, especially so early in the show. However it helped Simon grow into a man so it had a purpose.Β

Oh my God, that was the saddest fucking scene. I think everyone who watched it lost their shit at that point.Β

It was pretty good, the plot ends up being a little flat at the end but I think it was Β worth watching. Reminds me of Death Note meets Monster.Β

GAH! Sorry i thought I'd already replied to this!

I think Kamina's death was well executed. Like the writters tricked everyone into thinking he was the main character and then decided "lol. nope"

How have you been lately? Been up to anything interesting?

I've just gotten back from a trip to the US. Started off in Chicago, tehn SOuth Dakota, fighished things off by visiting my aunts in Florida and Georgia. Now that i'm back i'm chasing my tail to catch up on what i've missed.

I've been doing okay. It has been a little busy since this is the time where I have to do an "exam" (but really its a grant you write and a presentation) to progress through the program. How was your Christmas?

Yeah about the same for me. You would think the Holidays would wind down a little. NOPE! Work going well?

Thank you I finished my classes and for the "exam" is it a presentation but you had to read/study to know what to talk about. Now it is mostly just research from here on out which is nice. Your attention is very divided in the first year.

Aww. They're really cute when they are that age. My friend was visiting his sister on boxing day because it was the only day the whole family could get together for dinner. Long story short his brother was going nuts because everyone got the kids noisy toys for Christmas.

My Christmas was good. Went over to my aunt's house for dinner and got to catch up with my cousins. My cousin pretty much topped everyone's stories with something that happened at her dental practice. After looking in to a pregnant patient because she was concerned about her, she uncovered human trafficking.

Yeah, work is going well. I've taken on a bunch of new responsibilities which leaves me quite bust. There have been a few admins that have left, only one is being replaced, however from the sounds of things we are having issues in his recruitment. Hopefully when this new guys starts and settles into the role, it will help to relieve some of the pressure on the rest of us.Β

Have you ever heard of someone falling down the stairs while trying to change a pillow case? well apparently that happened to a support worker and he tried to sew, claiming that he hadn't been trained to do it.

Are you going to continue with your cancer research?

Have you seen the latest Star Wars movie?
