Hey, I saw your 3rd year exhibition at the Swansea Grand Theatre yesterday. Your stuff is really good! Particularly the character reference sheets.

Got any tips for a 2nd year student in terms of colouring, tone, character design, and the 3rd year?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KayDrawsThings In reply to The-Quill-Warrior [2014-05-22 06:03:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh, thank you! Your stuff is awesome!Β

I think the best tips I could give you is to find artists whose style you like, and experiment using their styles to see how they make it work, then incorporate a version of what you like about it into your own work. I have to say it's been what's most effective for me!

When it comes to over all knowledge about composition, colours, tone and such, I'd definitely look into some online courses like Chris Oatley's Magic Box or Noah Bradley's Art Camp or the likes! Or even just tutorials on YouTube. Same thing for characters; Will Terrell, for instance, does amazing Youtube videos where he creates cartoony characters while talking about how he bases them on observing random people and generally useful tips on being an artist Β
Also, never feel like you SHOULD be creating a special style or a certain type of characters. I think what makes something successful is the combination of knowledge, hard work and drawing what comes naturally to you; you're the only you out there, so if you create "from the heart", as they say, there will always be a uniqueness to what you make.

This took me the majority of the first two years to figure out, and I really wish I'd done it sooner!Β

What I'd say is most important for a good third year is to 1) find a project(s) that you're passionate about, and 2) find out whether you're more comfortable working with long projects or shorter ones. I only did one, and I have to say I should have at least broken it down into sections and given myself deadlines for them along the way, as I lacked structure and a specific direction after a while. Time management is key, especially when you have to balance the Dissertation and other modules as well! Β

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I hope this was somewhat helpful!Β

Thank you for replying and the compliment! ^^

I'll take note of all these artists and designers.

As for the fifth statement, I actually already have a long project in the works that I plan to take with me into my career.

If you've seen my gallery, you probably know what I'm talking about.

But thank you! Enjoy your new life after college! 8D

Awesome, your project looks fantastic! I did the same thing for my major module as well, except my project is a children's book I've worked on forever. Good luck with everything, I hope you really enjoy your third year! : D

I definitely will, thank you!!
