You know i'm currently working for SS right?
I fill my sparetime up with tradional exercises , blocking out heads , lightplanes , head proportions.
But I suck dick for some reasons , people tell me to use references.
I rather draw from memory , cause i think it's the key for different style.

Hey KCT,
I meant that you should both draw and model. And when you start out organic modeling, you should start out with the simplified shapes to learn the basic structures.
I can tell you numbers of stuff that I have problem with modern 3D modelers that does not understand the form of facial features and proportions. If they just took maybe a week to study classical head sculptures, their models would look 200% better.
Just my 2 cents....

you are so right , i really would love to start some figure drawing on a professional level , but since i'm living in the Netherlands and not in Belgium i don't have acces to figure drawing lessons.
They don't teach fine arts here , only modern abstract shit.
I have to learn myself , I already picked up a B Hogarth book.
Will be starting this day.

I thought Europe's art caricullum starts with traditional type of teaching... Things like Sight Sizing and stuff like that. I guess I am wrong.
B Hogarth... Man... I am not sure if he is the best example to follow in the beginning. I would start out looking up something more structure based. Like George B Bridgeman (eventhough his stuff was never my favorite... his work is known for basic structural construct of human figure).
And try modeling any of those Roman/Greek sculptures. I really recommend this one. If I teach 3D modeling class, this would be mandatory.

as far i know , Holland is not the place to study arts.
They teach cobra , appel , mondriaan cause its easier to sell.
I don't know much about tradional techniques its a shame really.
And i don't consider myself as a artist , i just wanna build interactive toys with degree in quality.
Modelling organic shapes requires certain lines that correspond to the muscular structure of a muscle group , the reason behind this is make the surface deform naturally when animating.
Topology / structure of the lines , there are rules in realistic humans.
It's hard to explain for someone who is new to this.
No worries i've been struggling with this for almost 3 years now , i'm still a newbie.
The studio i mentioned is intested hopefully will be working on a tom clancy game.

BTW... when I went to college, I thought Hogarth was the greatest thing too. Part of a big reason I applied to Art Center. He was an instructor there... But, he died in the same year I joined the school... Lame eh?

It's a pitty he died when you arrived , thats absolutely unfortunated.
I have decided to do 1 more helicopter for game , then i move on to other specific areas which i should have mastered months ago , yes it includes drawing.
I have zillions of things in mind , hopefully i will finish them before the end of 2006
