 understand that wild rats can be very dangerous to our health but poisen is a very cruel way to kill... it causes the rats a lot of pain and they die slowly (some rat poisens cause internal bleeding)

I convinced her to get a sound repellent thing but she went ahead and ordered a poison bait trap anyway... I called her an evil, nasty cow. She is being stupid about this going on like we have an infestation of rabid lions when in reality it's a couple of rats that are only passing through the garden!

sound repellent usually works fine
Humans these days have so much trouble just living in peace with their environment and the creatures around them...
I think we humans just have so much trouble adjusting to our surroundings that everything wild scares us

I am gonna convince her to get another sound repellent thingy, she has one and it seems to be working on that side of the garden but now they're just borrowing in on the other side. 
I told her she needs to stop buying all these stupid chemicals and just invest in something more humane, she won't just be killing rats, she will be killing mice, hedgehogs and anything else small and innocent that eats it.

This is the first and hopefully only time she has done something completely out of character, I would have never thought my mother, the person who cried when her dad cooked live oysters would do something so cruel!

My mother was the kindest person I knew
Then she had a racist boyfriend who only saw animals as food... she changed since then but they broke up and it's getting better again

We've just been sitting here watching Dog Rescuers and she's going "Any one that can cause that kind of harm to an animal wants shooting" Took everything for me to keep my mouth shut and not cause an argue.
They are burrowing under that slabs, or they are trying to.

I know that feeling... My mother actually freaked out when I gave my rats live mealworms. She said that was extremely cruel of me even though she doesn't like them.
But my rats actually bite off the head first. I think it's more "humane" than what a human could do.

That's not good. I hope you find a way that is gonna help you and not harm the rats

I think that's actually really good of you to be giving them a proper diet rather then just the mixed food from a pet shop. I tired to give my canary a live insect but he just stared at it.

My mom has come to realize that she will never win the war on the rats and is looking more into rat proofing. Finally.
