Arrgh... I'd try to say something in French but it's been so long since I've spoken or written it that I'd worry about butchering the language... that and I think I'd need to copy and paste text from word to have the correct accents on the letters. So, I'll just say thanks for the great pictures and for responding back.

Idraemir In reply to KindofBoring [2013-05-09 00:58:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes my language is difficult and twisted^^ (in Belgium we also have a lots of words and expressions That French people do not understand). Try your best if you want, i shall try to understand you.

Silly Frenchmen. At least they have liberty, equality and fraternity... and fantastic food and alcohol. Belgium also has delicious chocolates. Mmm... chocolate... I'll save my pitiful attempts at lingua franca for when I haven't been drinking. Also, if you ever get the chance to come across the pond, the United States has some amazing cemeteries to photograph, anything from the American Civil War of the 19th century especially, some of the places are just plain spooky. Japan as well, the Shinto tombs are amazing... though if I recall they didn't take too kindly to the idea of photographing them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Idraemir In reply to KindofBoring [2013-05-09 01:27:09 +0000 UTC]

For the food i agree but alcohol is our speciality (More than 1000 kind of beers)^^'.

"I'll save my pitiful attempts at lingua franca for when I haven't been drinking"

Ah ah ! Try to speak french after 5 "Chimay bleue" (blue Chimay ?).

"Also, if you ever get the chance to come across the pond, the United States has some amazing cemeteries to photograph, anything from the American Civil War of the 19th century especially, some of the places are just plain spooky"

I'am going to travel here and there but I am interested about the war of independence. Thus who knows ? Maybe that one day I shall make a little trip in this country.

For the Asian culture, I shall see more the imperial city of the Cambodia : Angkor and its magnificent statues.

KindofBoring In reply to Idraemir [2013-05-09 03:54:19 +0000 UTC]

But doesn't Belgium also have fantastic baked goods as well?

Okay let's see. C'est vrai. Biere de Belgique, ils sont magnifique.

(I'm rather partial to Hoegaarden, La Chouffe, Verboden and of course Chimay... which they do label 'Blue Chimay' here I think... doesn't ring quite like Chimay Blue though... and it's unfortunaley rare. My personal favorite though, Delirium, drink a few bottles of Noele and whew... done sir done.)

Biere Americain? Mon Dieu... en general... merde.

There are some good microbreweries though, sadly, a lot of them put way too much hops in the brew, makes me sneeze.

The war of American Independence is quite fascinating, not the least for Lafayette's ridiculously long name. Sadly again, due to manufacturing and production statutes imposed by the British Crown at the time a lot of American goods were of seriously substandard quality and a lot of the sites are in poor repair as well because of the low quality materials used in their construction but you can find some excellent battlefields, historical sites and high quality reproductions if you look hard enough.

There's also, I think, one of the world's most exceptional cemeteries in London, so not as much of a trip. High Gate, I believe, one of the places that inspired Stoker's Dracula.

I've always wanted to go to Angkor Wat. I think I'd break my camera with all the pictures I'd take.

So we are famous for the beer, the chocolate, the waffels (Liège), the "french-fries" (and it's not french !), the "couques de Dinant" (a kind of hard biscuits), the "laquemants" (a little waffle with a lot of special syrup),... and a lot of other things.

I agree for the beer but i drink especially the hydromel (celtic beer with honey) or sweet beers (pécheresse, kriek lambic,...).

"Biere Americain? Mon Dieu... en general... merde."

I know the desperados and the Budweiser and that's too bitter for me.

"There are some good microbreweries though, sadly, a lot of them put way too much hops in the brew, makes me sneeze."

Send them to make an internship in Belgium .

"construction but you can find some excellent battlefields, historical sites and high quality reproductions if you look hard enough."

That could be interesting, for the moment I look especially at information on the battle of Culloden in the Scotland, further to what I wrote on the subject.

"There's also, I think, one of the world's most exceptional cemeteries in London, so not as much of a trip. High Gate, I believe, one of the places that inspired Stoker's Dracula."

There are 12 great graveyard in London and Highgate is the most popular... but it's expensive (15 or 20 pounds !), you must follow the guide (At a run) and you can't film... For my second trip to London I made half of Brompton and the graveyard of Chiswick (Not still published).

In fact Stoker based is book on the poem of one Belgian author for as well as of the story of vampires that there was to Highgate : people found bled and settled and a guy while arrested after he opened graves with a picket to the hand it seems to me...

"
I've always wanted to go to Angkor Wat. I think I'd break my camera with all the pictures I'd take."

Ah ah, me too^^'.

Long day... Now I really want to go to Belgium and eat various breakfasts.

I'm not a big fan of most Lambics but every once and a while I get really in the mood for some good honey/vanilla/juniper mead.

I'm fine with the bitterness of most American beers it's the... watered down flavorlessness that gets me. I have this reaction where I ask myself if I just drank a Budweiser or water.

I'd send the microbrewers over if I could but I don't think they'd listen to me.

My desire to visit High Gate has just dropped dramatically now that I know the cost and the manner of the tours.

Do you remember the name of the poem?

"My desire to visit High Gate has just dropped dramatically now that I know the cost and the manner of the tours."

Try the other cemeteries, there are peaceful, beautifuls and free...

"Do you remember the name of the poem?"

According to my notes it's a book named : Le Capitaine Vampire (the vampire captain). Too bad you can translate the french. Mys speciality is to compare all the versions of a mythical creature and explore is evolution after the years... (i store that on a page but i work with some Illustrators to create a book).

I do like architecture, how does Belgium fare on that front?

Honey is especially delicious when you mix it with something spicy.

Hehe... but water doesn't have alcohol in it... unless...

Even more than England, I'd love to go to the catacombs in Paris, and I've always wanted to see an ossuary in real life too.

Excellent, now I really want to read the two side by side, I just have to figure out where I stored Dracula. Your speciality sounds really cool, like evolutionary cryptozoology or chronologically influenced mythologic interpretation. But then I've always been a sucker for mythology and folklore.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Idraemir In reply to KindofBoring [2013-05-11 03:03:33 +0000 UTC]

If you like architecture, you must visit the Churches and cathedrals in Liège, Namur, Bruxelles,... In Bruxelles you can visit a museum about a man who create a kind of architecture (i do not remember his name, shame on me...), and if you like the ancient celtic sites (not destroyed by the church...) you can go to the ardennes.

If you want i've got a recipe to cook a salmon with honey.

The catacombs of Paris... A den of junkies and drinkers of blood (in the literal sense) but intersting. I prefer the catacombs of Prague.

i have to read it too^^'. My work is based on ancient text (the Edda, the Mabinogion,...) but my purpose is to explain the myths for every public... I think that folklorists does not explain enough things, symbols, historic facts or famous characters, what returns the incomprehensible thing for many.

I try my best to eplain with a little touch of sarcasm to relax.

Je suis desole. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I spent most of yesterday baking cake and today partaking in obligatory family/Mothers' Day celebrations.

I really enjoyed the Celtic sites in Ireland, so I'd definitely love to see some of the mainland antiquities/locations. And, now I know the places to visit in Belgium for excellent architecture, many thanks.

I would love a recipe for honey salmon.

Hematophagy... drinking blood... weird, but then I'm not a huge fan of the taste myself. I'm going to have to look up the catacombs in Prague now. I also really want to take the Seattle Underground tour in Washington state. Old parts of the city are apparently about 9 meters underground and still in good condition.

I've read the Edda (liked the Heroic Cycles, loved the Mythologic Cycles), I need to read the Mabinogion and the Niebelungenlied. I've got a lot of Lady Gregory's works as well as some Campbell and Frazer that I need to read... something else always seems to get in the way though.

So with the folklorists and sharing myths... kind of like the difference between hearing information and gaining knowledge?

Oups sorry too for the delay, i was (and i'm still busy) very busy to work on a big piece (an article on Cernunnos and his other incarnations : Herne the Hunter, Arawn, Csodaszarvas, Saint Hubertus,...).

"many thanks."

My pleasure^^'.

Try The Razzia of Cooley and the cycle of Finn too.

"

Humm i'm not sure of the sense of your words, can you explain this part ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KindofBoring In reply to Idraemir [2013-05-16 02:40:20 +0000 UTC]

"I think that folklorists does not explain enough things, symbols, historic facts or famous characters, what returns the incomprehensible thing for many."

My interpretation from your wording was that the folklorists either aren't providing the proper context, aren't explaining the breadth and depth of what they are studying or already expect those listening to have a basic understanding/ knowledge of mythology/folk lore.

The difference I suppose between saying Samhain is Halloween is All Saints Day and telling people that Halloween is a popularized dilution/modernization of Samhain rituals evolved over 1,500 years and that All Saints Day and Samhain were mapped to each other/given corellation by Christian Missionaries in the fifth and sixth centuries as a way of adapting Celtic/Pagan culture to the expansion of monotheism.

A folklorist says the first thing, you say the second, the difference being that where the folklorist merely says "is" you say "this is because and this is how and this is why."

Kind of like the give a man a fish/teach a man to fish proverb. The Folkorist would say that Odin knew great magics. You would say that Odin was on a quest for wisdom and knowledge as the patriarch of the Aesir, sacrificing much, hanging from the tree, dropping an eye into Mimisbrunnr, and by his consulting the prophetic dead Volva in the Voluspo.

They are telling or spreading information you are providing or giving knowledge. That's how I saw it anyway.

Humm to explain my point a view take the Educational psychology. It's boring, Tuck of indigestible informations and the language is very complex while these guys have to make an understandable message pass as all...

If you want to explain something so complex... you must explain a few things before. Take Nidhogg the Dragon/snake under Yggdrasil... If you don't explain what's are the 9 worlds and much things the people do not understand... You see ?

(sorry once again for the delain i translate a few old texts very hardcore^^').
