Sorry it took me so long to respond. I don't visit here often. No I'm not in the SCA. I have several friends and aquaintences that are. I tried to play with them a few times but just dont care for the whole "persona" thing. That and I have major issues with every level of the way they to combat.

It's rare that you will find groups dedicated to just the Scottish two hander because there is no known existing text on how the weapon was used. There is alot of German and Italian Longsword texts to use as a base but no native Gaelic ones. There is some English two hander info that may be more relevant in which they describe two handers being used much like a stav (quarterstaff).
Check out the Cateran Society- (i'm a member of this group as well)- it focuses it's studies on just Scottish martial arts though the emphasis is very much on the broadsword. However most are pretty familiar with the latest in research and theories on the Highland two hander.

hmm what i heard was the key to the claymore in battle was to sever off body parts-that it would be swung around the head to take off the head or in a figure of 8 to take off arms and legs....thanks for the link, im sure to have a look

HighlandMan In reply to poeticider [2007-03-19 12:44:33 +0000 UTC]
Im afraid that is extremely simplistic. There are 8 basic lines of attack. A figure 8 movement would only cover 4 of them (even then it would really only be two and then you would have to switch the direction of the figure 8 to get the other 2). There is also thrusting which can be done at any angle. Not to mention the large variety of halfswording movements that can be done in addition to all the grappling that can be done as well.

I love your "guns for show, blades for a pro" quote! They said something similar in Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels - one of my all time favorite movies!
"Guns for show, knives for a pro"
At least I *think* he said knives. Who knows, maybe it was blades? hehe
Thanks for the fav!

courtesy of IMDB.com:
Eddie: Oh, and if Tom or anyone else for that matter feels like givin' them a bit of a kickin', I'm sure it won't do any harm.
Soap: Yeah, little bit of pain never hurt anybody. If you know what I mean. Also, I think knives are a good idea. Big, fuck-off shiny ones. Ones that look like they could skin a crocodile. Knives are good, because they don't make any noise, and the less noise they make, the more likely we are to use them. Shit 'em right up. Makes it look like we're serious. Guns for show, knives for a pro.
Tom: Soap, is there something we should know about you?
Bacon: I'm not sure what's more worrying. The job or your past.
I think I'll watch it again, too :-D

Thank you for the comments! My Clan is Grant. I am of Scottish ancestry and love it! There is also some Sweede in me but thats not a bad thing either. Of course, when you think about it, no one is pure anything anyway. Well, what I dont have in blood I make up for in spirit! I should have some photos of a longsword class im teaching up in the near future- stay tuned!

Thanks so much for the on my pic The Swords. I'm happy you like them! I see you have a great outfit with the kilt and the swords... very nice. I might get a kilt sometime this year myself... since I've joined a band of bagpipers and am in the process of learning to play.
Are you of Scottish heritage, perhaps? I'm not, unfortunately....
take care!
