I haven't down much with my pokemon characters for a while now sadly. My friends and I have been playing a lot of Dungeons and Dragons, and even streaming our sessions. So most of my free time and attention has been put more on those stories for the time being. So you haven't missed much of anything.

I mean, when it comes to the pokemon designs, a lot of it is just drawing them often and not being afraid to change things up over time.. Personality helps too.

If you know the character's personality, their likes and dislikes, how they act around others, it helps show how to draw them. Example, if you have a peppy and positive character, it's a lot easier to draw them grinning, laughing and all around happy. And that can move into their design. Lighter colored cloths and accessories for example.

For pokemon and other fan characters, don't be afraid to draw off from the official design. An example I can give is Eva. When I first made her I tried to keep her looking more similar to the official design (fav.me/d3frd3s ) but over time and developing her character, it evolved into what she is now (fav.me/d7okngk ). It's to the point the old drawings of her don't feel like they're the same character to me. I mean really the same thing can be said about any of my pokemon characters, Like Spike (fav.me/d4g8p4m ), or Taislla (fav.me/d4s6odk ).

I know it's something you hear a lot, but practice does really help by leaps and bounds. Try drawing a character with different expressions, different poses, just... draw. Designing is never a one and done kinda thing. It's something that will change as you get better and better at your art and your style develops. Character design wise, I've redone old characters in the past because what I once thought worked doesn't fit with how I draw now.
