Ah yes.  You know I actually hated star wars when I was little.  Thought they were long boring and stupid.  Only later to realize that those were the prequels!  Yes I was not properly introduced to star wars.  Here's a proper summary in how I watched them.

I Phantom Menace - saw it when I was like 5 or 6 a few times, kinda long but sort of interesting.
II Attack of the Clones - saw it in the theatre at age 7 and literally was begging my parents to go home because it was boring.
III Revenge of the Sith - saw it when I was 10 and quite liked it.  Yeah not as much now, but still an exciting action packed film, and it got me interested in star wars for the first time.

VI Return of the jedi - Yes I started with ROTJ when watching the original trilogy.  I wanted to see darth vader unmasked at the end.  This was the 2004 version with Hayden Christiansen replacing Sebastian Shaw as anikans ghost.

V Empire strikes back - I then watch empire strikes back to see how it was han got frozen in carbonite.  I was sick from school so I was at an empty photo lab across the hall from a computer lab where my dad taught (at a city college).  I knew there was a VHS player there.  So I found a VHS of empire strikes back, which was the 1997 version with Luke's infamous scream when he jumped off.

IV New Hope - Honestly, this was kinda underwhelming.  Still a classic great film.  But after watching episode VI and especially Episode V which was dark, this was really cheesy to me.  Luke was more annoying.  Han was way to big of a jerk.  Leias hair was too silly.  and the award ceremony at the end with the medals.  OMG that was like watching the end of a disney movie where aladdin saved the day and got medals.

So for years I got to liking the original trilogy more and more.  I then watched Mr. Plinketts movie length reviews for each star wars prequels.  A sadistically wonderful man.  It isn't much of a surprise that Lucas didn't do a good job with the prequels because as the Nostalgia Critic pointed out in his disneycember review of Phantom menace.  Before the prequels, he had only directed one star wars film, New Hope, and as good as it was, it had a lot of flaws in it.  So like 22 years later with almost no directing lucas now is expected to bring a masterpeice?

Now Episode VII - Gooood movie. Real good.  Did not quite feel george lucas like though, not sure if that's good or bad.  Let's say it felt alot different from the prequels and more well like the original trilogy a bit.  great colors in it.  I was dissapointed that in the trailer, it didn't say star wars VEEE EYE EYE (episode VII), but I was sooo happy to see those magical roman numerals in the opening scroll.

BTW I found it interesting that at the beginning with the LUCASFILM logo, there was no 20th century fox fanfare because it's no longer 20th century.

Well, it’s a Star Wars novel that tells the story of what happens five years after Return of the Jedi; the Empire has been defeated and pushed back to where they control a quarter of the galaxy by the Rebel Alliance—now the New Republic—Han and Leia are married and expecting Jedi twins, and Luke has been helping with the reparations of the galaxy and its new government. However, there is an Imperial Warlord lurking about called Grand Admiral Thrawn who is a military genius intent on taking the remnants of the Imperial Fleet and striking back at the Republic when it is vulnerable to retake the galaxy.

I honestly recommend that you read it. It is the first book in a series called The Thrawn Trilogy, and its next two books are Dark Force Rising and The Last Command. Here is an audiobook version of it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-Ws6x…, just so you can get an idea of what its like. I hope you like it.

Many thanks.  Though I've never held much interest for the star wars books.  Read one once, don't remember the name.  Also I see no reason to get invested in the Expanded Universe given that it's no longer canon.  Unless it's about Bren Derlin, that guy in Empire Strikes back played by John Ratzenburger from all those pixar movies.

There is a reason why fans invested in these stories so much, and if you were to read a good number of them, and pit them against Disney’s recent “canon,” you may come to understand why they are trying hard to get rid of the stories and characters we love.

Very interesting.  But I don't hold high enough interest in Star wars to look into these articles.  Just got of audio books from library today.  Just listened to Lemoney Snicket's The Bad Beginning narrated by tim curry.  That book is torture porn.  Good nonetheless.  In addition I picked up jack london's call of the wild narrated by jeff daniels and also taggerung narrated by Mr Jaques before his perishment.

I’m disappointed in you. I had hoped you could understand my position on this matter, but it seems I was wrong. You just cannot understand the crime that has been committed against Star Wars; its creator, the artists, and the fans who labored so hard to support it. They destroyed 38 years of a continuity that has barely changed in that time, a universe where there were no alternate timelines, one single canon which everybody could get into and see a continuous, single timeline without any meddling, and almost all the material intertwined with each other including the first six films. What Disney did was a lie unto itself; “creative freedom” was their claim. However, what they did was take elements from the discontinued Expanded Universe and renamed them to their own liking without crediting their creators. That is unethical on their part, and I cannot stand for it.

How would you feel if somebody took Redwall or The Secret of NIMH, took everything you liked about either one, and threw them out the window to make up their own version of it that is a smack to everything they stood for? Disney has been growing too powerful over the last few years, and they are squelching out everybody’s creativity, discrediting them, and marketing themselves as “original” when it is far from the truth. George Lucas himself disliked what they did with the handling of the film, and he supported the Expanded Universe. Heir to the Empire was what saved Star Wars in 1991 from obscurity while continuing the story in a novel way unlike anything done before, and Disney has snubbed it by saying “this did not happen.” How could you stand for something like that?

I don’t want to be hard on you, but Disney is using the ignorance and disinterest of the Expanded Universe for their advantage. I wanted to tell you a story idea I had, but it incorporates elements of the Expanded Universe as part of the story, which you seem so disinterested in that you would rather not listen. I think it is best that we part ways, since I could not to get you to see through my eyes than to close yours forever. I had told you a great truth, but what I would have taught you was not in the truth, but your use of it.

Farewell to you.

It's certainly is a great disappointment for star wars fans that have read into the expanded universe so much.  I myself would be annoyed if Redwall got improperly adapted, and I hope if someone were to adapt some of the redwall books, that it be done well.  As for NIMH, the strange thing is, as much as I love the movie, it added alot of elements to the story that were not in the book.

I know If I was invested into star wars Expanded Universe as I was into with redwall, I'd be quite dissapointed with the decision to make the entire series non canonical.  All I can say is that personally me, someone whom has never read expanded universe (except for "Last of the jedi" though i don't think that counts), i liked when seeing episode VII that I did not know what was going to happen.  With the star wars prequels, we ultimately knew anikan had to turn bad and become vader, it all was completely unavoidable.  With Episode VII, this was the first time in my lifetime where I did not know what was going to happen in the future.

In general that is my problem with any film adaptaion with books, is that you know what's going to happen.  And that is the way it should be if the film is based off a book series that is very well known.  As for star wars it started as a film series, then expanded into books based off the material.  So when decision came to make the expanded universe Un cannon, it was a BIG and RISKY decision disney had to make.  Some people like me didn't care so much, but for others it was a real stab in the heart for something they held so deeply.

For what it's worth, it dissapointed me that Disney more or less shut down LucasArts, the videogame company responsible for all the great star wars games of course, but also their other games such as Monkey Island and Full Throttle.  There was more to lucasarts than just star wars, and it was sad for me when I found out it was shut down by disney.

Your feelings about disney taking down expanded universe are very relevant, but do not retain this dismay for the sequel trilogy or disney, afterall that's the path to the dark side.  But your no sith, your one who loves to write and analyze stories, and don't let anyone take that away from you.

Sincerely,
Foxystig

Vader999 In reply to FoxyStig [2016-05-14 15:31:08 +0000 UTC]

I would venture to disagree. By the time I was halfway though, I knew what was gonna happen in Episode VII. I liked the Expanded Universe better because it took the story into different and wildly changing turns, kinda like a PG Game of Thrones in space, while EPVII got so predictable my friend fell asleep in the damn movie theater. And even he never fell asleep in the romance scenes in EPII. That's right: he fell asleep in the combat scenes knowing how they will end. Except for Rey winning, of course, which breaks the Star Wars lesson of "training and discipline are needed for victory", which is the lesson that Empire Strikes Back, arguably the best Star Wars film, imparted to us.

For the Expanded Universe, they not only kept to the essence of the Original Trilogy, but also expanded upon them. Rogue Jedi, non-Force-using enemy leaders, a resurrected Emperor, Luke falling in love with a Sith assassin, it took all sorts of wild, unpredictable, and engaging turns. And the logic behind it made sense: In the Expanded Universe, the New Republic builds up a strong military force to hound the Empire to the far side of the galaxy. They maintain a powerful military presence to make sure that the Empire is kept from being a threat to them. In the Disney canon, the New Republic, after driving the Imperials from the core, demilitarized themselves and purposefully made themselves weaker, while letting the Imperials escape to the Outer Rim to rebuild their forces. In the old universe, the New Republic had brains and balls, and used them properly. In the new universe, the New Republic lacked for both brains and balls, and deserved to get wiped out by the First Order. They had that artificial stupidity for the faction of the good guys just to write their EPIV ripoff.

Point being, not only did they get rid of good stories with character development, stories that they could easily turn into movies since that's what Disney was doing with Marvel anyways, they also left a great big void-which is now being filled by a ripoff of ANH that had all its visuals and none of its values or essence.

As I've said to someone else, I've finally found a way to put The Force Awakens into words......

It's a great Marvel movie with a Star Wars coat on top. As a hero/adventure film, it's excellent. As a Star Wars film, it's not.

The good guys go from place to place fighting, the heroine masters the Force the same way Marvel heroes master super powers-without much training. There's a bumbling sidekick, a large battle, a dramatic scene with a father-figure murdered, and the bad guy gets defeated just because the heroine has powers. Not because she trained or anything.

What's that? Love redeems? Yeah, no, Han gets killed by his ingrate son even though Ren has no real reason to remain as Snoke's lapdog. What's that? A bunch of courageous Rebels united by love, faith, and family overthrows the Empire? Nope. A stronger Empire shows up out of nowhere, builds a superweapon that makes the Death Star look like a laser pen, and the Jedi are still gone while the good guys are still poor resistance fighters. Luke needed to complete his training with Yoda before defeating Vader? Nope, some random desert hobo can take on a dark-sider who chased Luke away and win, even though she hasn't even had a day of training whatsoever.

Even the characters become upside-down. Leia is a supportive and aggressive gung-ho officer who is always at the side of her friends? Nope, she's now an armchair general, even though she could probably be a Jedi and use the Force to shut down Kylo. Han Solo grows up from a mercenary drugrunner into a responsible adult and a soldier for freedom? Nope, he's back to smuggling stuff for criminal scum, and instead of harmless drugs, he now trades in murderous tentacle-hentai monsters. Luke is a hero who would never abandon his friends and would always do the right thing and save them? Nope, he creates a monster in Kylo Ren then runs like a wimp, hiding in a forest while the monster he made terrorizes the galaxy.

You might as well chuck the OT into the sun. Nothing there matters now. The only way one can see TFA as a good Star Wars movie is if you wipe away everything the OT teaches. Or anything the heroes in the OT accomplished. Or both. Definitely both.
