I absolutely agree with what you said about dragons. I love drawing them because you just have so much freedom, you can draw them as you like, and no-one can really tell you it's wrong because they're fantasy creatures!
(even though people have tried to tell me how a REAL dragon looks like... lol)

Yes, dragons are lovely because you have almost endless freedom with their designs. It's very different than drawing unicorns or phoenixes, for example. Of course, there are some guidelines for anatomy but they depend a lot on the overall design. ^^

Has someone ever told you your dragon doesn't look right?
I know many people who critisize dragons (both mine and/or someone else's work) and it irritates me a little. And those people aren't even artists themselves mostly. They just pick the best visual image (for them) of a dragon they've seen somewhere and claim that is the correct one.. Which is absurd.

Yes, it is indeed great that you can just let your imagination fly freely with designs when you're drawing dragons. The amount of possibilities is practically endless!
Yeah, someone has actually told me that my dragon or a part of it doesn't look right. The people, who have said so, have mostly pointed out anatomical mistakes. In many cases, I have found their points rather helpful. They have not stated their opinions rudely but I still haven't always listened to them because I have wanted different things from my drawings than what they have suggested. I think their opinions can often be helpful because they can help me see what might be those possible things that sometimes disturb me with the anatomy of my drawings, and which I still can't quite put my finger on.
But still, I agree with you there. It's not right that people pick a dragon that they think looks cool and say its anatomy or design is the only correct one. I haven't really encountered such people IRL or URL but I have heard of them from other artists. It's even worse if they are not artists themselves or couldn't draw the anatomy they adore and they still go and criticize other people's work. Especially if it wasn't asked from them.
I, personally, prefer that people say what they think about my drawings but not so much unless they also tell why they think what they think and how I could improve in the things I'm not so good at. It's nice to hear someone say that they like my art, but it's even nicer when they also say what makes them like it.

Exactly! That's one of the main reasons I love drawing dragons! I adore dragons overall, but the 'let your imagination fly free' feeling is just so amazing. You have no direct boundaries really and can go wild with designs. I think a dragon is one of a kind, other fantasy creatures have more finely defined boundaries, but a dragon.. it's almost like having no limits!
Well anatomical tips are always welcome, I agree. But eventually it really comes down to vision. People just have different imaginations, and that's completely normal. What makes things rude or wrong is a person telling you something is wrong with how you imagine it... for gods sake it's a fantasy creature Ever heard of fantasy people? xD
Oh yeah, I mostly know people IRL who define what dragons look like. It always makes me so mad, but I never express it that much. I have made a remark along the lines of ''dragons are fantasy, ergo they don't have a defined structure/anatomy/design'', but people don't really listen to that argument and still keep having their opinions... And the worst thing is that they don't really point to an anatomy flaw (in their opinion) or anything in particular for that matter. For them it JUST looks wrong. And forget styles, these people haven't even heard of ''different people have different styles''.
Yeah, if they would be artists, I would appreciate their opinion and hear out their vision, but almost all of them have been non-artists (not even sligtly artists). It just pisses me off so I'm glad we're in agreement and understand each other And sorry about ranting so much!
