About my taxidermyI've always been interested in animals. Live ones, but dead ones too. From when I was a child I loved to collect bones and skulls I found in the park near to my house. When I was twelve, everyone in my class knew I was interested in dead things, and one of my classmates showed me a dead magpie he found. I took it home to skin and stuff it. My parents were so mad because they thought I bought yet another mount, haha! Sadly I don't have that magpie anymore, it got eaten by moths.
For years and years I could only look at all these beautiful mounts and skulls from other people on the internet or museums. I wanted to be a taxidermist for so long but I was too insecure to ask someone for help or to tell my parents and friends I really wanted to do this, working with dead animals and all, it's still weird to a lot of people.
8 years later, in 2016 I finally got the guts to ask some nearby taxidermists if I could take a taxidermy class from them. One responded and showed me everything I had to know and helped me mount my first bird. I'm still so grateful she made such an effort to help me with this. This first bird was mounted at the end of january, 2016. So I'm a real beginner but I'm very eager to learn and to become better at taxidermy!

Hello, I'm having a few questions regarding bird taxidermy and as I love your results, I hope you can help me?
Two days ago I mounted my first bird, an European jay, with a less than average result due to taking out four bones out by accident that were needed for stability--
So there is plenty more of room to improve. My first question would be, how you remove the flesh from its wings around the "elbow"? I'm afraid I couldn't clean it well enough.
Secondly, I prepared my skin with letting it soak in supralan to degrease for some minutes, then put seibokal on it to tan it, just to mount it just after. Is this a safe way?

Which four bones did you remove, the ones in the legs? Haha 
Cleaning the flesh out of the wings can be a little hard sometimes. Way harder than cleaning the legs and head. I always try to keep those primary feathers attached to the bone, and just try to clean around that. Sometimes when I can't reach everything I make an incision just to get the rest out. It's hard to explain though. Have you bought the Carl Church book yet? It tells everything step-by-step with photo's! Helped me a lot in the beginning. And I haven't heard of those, but after googling them I think they work the same as the stuff I use myself. Sounds good to me. Just make sure you remove as much fat and other tissue before soaking it.Β

My answer comes a bit belated, I must admit!
I think I removed two bones from the leg and the wings, you can imagine how the finished mount looked like - the second one got a lot better, but there still is so much room for improvement. If you want, I can take photos for you!
I never head about the book before but I finally had enough on paypal to buy it. You're a lifesaver! Thank you so much for replying and suggesting me this book, it'll come in handy. After I studied it enough, I'll try myself on the third bird and hope the quality improves!

Ik ben een illustrator/grafisch ontwerper. Daar zijn er ook genoeg van op de wereld. Te veel mensen en te weinig jobs. Maar gelukkig heb ik nu de ene opdracht na de andere. Ik ben nog maar 2 maand bezig en ik verwacht mindere maanden maar op het moment kan ik niet klagen.Β
Mijn vriend en ik hebben het niet makkelijk gehad met jobs vinden (hij is ook een grafisch ontwerper) en we hebben ook zeer zuinig moeten leven. Dat doen we nu nog altijd, maar soms kunnen we wel iets extra uitgeven als traktatie.Β
Dat gaat wel goed komen hoor! Je vogels zien er goed uit en ja gaat bij elk exemplaar alsmaar beter worden!

En dat is inderdaad geluk hebben! Vooral in een baan waarbij de vraag naar mensen lager is dan het aanbod. Dat zal ik straks zelf ook ondervinden als ik klaar ben met mijn opleiding. (manager dierverzorging) Je komt eigenlijk alleen ergens terecht door te netwerken. Ken je de juiste mensen niet, dan kan je het schudden x.x
En jaa ik ben wel blij met m'n vogels! Pas 2 maanden geleden heb ik m'n eerste vogel opgezet, dus ik ga veel sneller vooruit dan ik gedacht had!Β
