How do you do the color effect -- start with a black shape, then have it morph over to white in a certain spot? I may not be able to do that on my GIMP art.

i just use the burn and dodge tool to create the shadows and highlights on the skin. the color you start with is like the median skin color. I feel those tools have more freedom in where i want to shade.
