Adding people is pretty easy; it'll be at the bottom of the contacts list on the left side. I think they also prompt you to add people the very first time you log in, like pretty much every other messenger.

It's pretty long, but it's on hiatus right now, which makes it the perfect time to catch up without having to worry about all the updates stacking up. : D
