Well, not to make this sound like a confessional or anything, but:

I've been doing my own nails for years now, strictly acrylic w/ tips. However, I've been exploring new methods that would cause less damage to my nails - specifically gel applications - but here's my problem: all the applications I see do not have the shape or style that I really want.

Your style in particular, does, though.

I love the high arch and deep curve that your nails have. So I guess I just want to ask you how you get that shape and how I might get it for myself. Are your nails just acrylic w/ tips that you've sculpted or some other method?

damage doesn't come from acrylic, it comes from the techniques we use to apply and adhere it. it'll apply just as well if you buff your nails and use a ph balancer before using primer as it does if you file it hardcore, with less damage.

the nails i do are acrylic and tips. the only reason i ever use gel is to do an overlay.

what you're talking about, the shape, curve, and length of the nails u faved is called a triple thick with a supercurve.

i'll take some photos during a supercurve and triple thick application because describing it is ridiculously hard LOL

i use tips by CND, they're normal tips called Eclipse. [those hawk style nails have too much of a curve unless you're doing an ultra curve and those need to be really short]. i use acrylic and liquid by CND as well - Retention liquid and PerfectCOLOR powder in natural which allows me to have a good natural color when i'm doing designs andonly partially painting the nail.

the ph balancer i use is by OPI - BondAID, and the primer i use comes from Sally's, one of the best primers ever - No Lift Nails.

a good set of nails starts with the products u use, to be honest. it's expensive and time consuming, but it's worth it. my nails never break, rarely chip unless my clients are hard on them, and by the 3 month mark when soak off time comes, they still aren't brittle and my clients have healthy nails.

let me take some photos, i have a couple full sets coming up and i'll just do kind of a time line thing, so you can see how i do my thicks and curves.

I totally understand what you're saying, too. There is no such thing as cutting corners when it comes to having quality nails. I'm going to do my best to get the products you suggest. I've tried to my local nail techs to let me know what they use but they just feed me lines about needing to have a professional do my nails. Well, I appreciate what they mean but at the same time, I can't seem to get anyone to do my nails the way I want (possible because I didn't know what to ask for) and it's very nice to be able to do my nails at my convenience.

So, given that, I really appreciate you taking the time to fill me in on what I'm missing out on to get the best nails possible.

truth be told, most every nail tech you'll meet started out doing the same thing you're doing now - fixing it themselves. they just want money, so that's teh line they give.
