How tings anyhow?

I have little time to do any visual work that isn't for someone else. I won't be putting up anything I've done at work, (for many reasons). Any visual projects I have are still on-going. I want my DevART page to be a portfolio of graphic art, but my time is all in work and audio stuff.

Nice to see you back on here though.

Fair enough.

What version of Cubase do you have?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CopyPasteRepeat In reply to VOLT-reborn [2009-06-06 23:37:14 +0000 UTC]

SX1... considerably old now, but it does what I need it to. I use other bits and bobs to make my noises too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VOLT-reborn In reply to CopyPasteRepeat [2009-06-07 11:37:00 +0000 UTC]

OK... I might be getting a newer version of it but I have no clue what or how to do anything on it... I just want to play about a bit really. Is it possible to make anything reasonable without a Midi keyboard or something?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CopyPasteRepeat In reply to VOLT-reborn [2009-06-07 13:43:15 +0000 UTC]

Really you need, (if you don't want to get involved with MIDI... which I don't to be honest) is audio. You'll need to get more gear (hardware) to record your own, but there's loads of loops and samples available online. Which ever Cubase you get it'll have some good standard effect plug-ins. I've been using that kind of setup for ages... and still do aside from my own recordings, live editing in Max/MSP and similar stuff on my new Kaoss Pad.

I'm sure you can find some big batch samples and loops via torrents. Throw them around in Cubase, cut 'em up, add some effects and you're most of the way there.

Thanks Ad. Even then I don't think i'll be anywhere close to your skill level but If I do get Cubase I'll let you know how it goes and probably rack your brain and knowledge so I don't suck as much.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CopyPasteRepeat In reply to VOLT-reborn [2009-06-08 18:58:33 +0000 UTC]

Hey, I'm no Cubase whizz. I just played about in it for years and some noises came out. Just give it time and you'll figure it out. But like all big professional software you won't ever really know it all... you'll just find what you need to know and work with that. Like I say, I don't use MIDI at all. Probably my downfall, but I'm happy.

Yeah, if you need to know anything just ask and hopefully I'll get more than half of the questions right.

I guess it's like me and Photoshop... I've used it for about 8 years now and I'm still finding out new ways to do things... I still don't know how to do that thing with photos where you can distort them with that grid i've seen people use. One day.

I'm sure That i'll be asking some questions almost right away. I was listening to the blade soundtrack today... always makes me remember your massive CD collection.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CopyPasteRepeat In reply to VOLT-reborn [2009-06-09 20:46:54 +0000 UTC]

Grid distort.... is that 'Free Transform > Warp'?

I've spent a lot more time in Illustrator this last year due to work. What with everything having print-based restrictions it's always best to stay in Illustrator to retain the quality. There's restrictions on certain things when in CMYK mode too which is a pain sometimes. Photoshop for me now is really about manipulating photos, (doctoring, cleaning up, colour filtering/tweaking).

I want to expand on the illustration side of Illustrator, (sounds odd) and I ordered myself a stylus/Wacom pad thing. I forget I had it on order it's been so long. Quite annoying. Still hasn't come.

Aside from freelance jobs I tend to use my home-time for audio work. Vocals for Fracture and Toxikhate and some remixes. Not a lot of time for solo work, but I'm IN Fracture now so I want to put my time into that. I'm meeting the creator of Fracture next week. God bless the Internets.

What sort of music do you want to make?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VOLT-reborn In reply to CopyPasteRepeat [2009-06-09 21:31:10 +0000 UTC]

You might be right i don't know. I've been in Illustraitor a lot too but mostly for making shapes and working out measurements for furnature and building stuff for this place.

What Wacom have you ordered?

I want to make some kind of mix between regge beats and electronic bleepy stuff maybe with some light vocal stuff but probably not... I just haven't heard anything like that so I thought i might be able to make it. Not that I know owt about Music.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CopyPasteRepeat In reply to VOLT-reborn [2009-06-12 21:43:28 +0000 UTC]

Not knowing anything about music may be a positive thing. Through ignorance comes originality?

Wacom pad.... yeah, it's a "Bamboo" one. Really cheap. I don't think it's high-end gear, but the reviews sound great and I don't want something to do full-on pieces with. More as a tool to create organic lines and shapes. Might use it to get ideas down quickly too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VOLT-reborn In reply to CopyPasteRepeat [2009-06-12 22:07:16 +0000 UTC]

what kind of hardwear/kit should I look into before I get Qubase?

Bamboo I know of it. It's not high end you're right but it is a Wacom! not like my first graphics tablet. Pretty good for starting off but for me and a lot of other people out there It's a little basic and small. I've been spoilt in a way having what I'e got. I'd love a Cintiq when My PL510 dies (I better start saving up).

I'll give you some advise asfor organic lines. Don't move the pen too slow or the line will wobble similarly don't move the pen too fast as the line can tend to become a set of jagged straight lines (that's how mine has been but it could be a problem with drivers and it's old tech now so hopefully you won't experiance it). once you play with it you'll get the feel of the speed you should work.

If I remember right the Bamboo has a 'rough' texture on the surface that will wear out your nib faster than if it were smooth so invest in some spare nibs they ain't a lot of money. I'm going to try out some of the felt tips when I get my New pen.

That was a bit epic.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CopyPasteRepeat In reply to VOLT-reborn [2009-06-13 16:37:59 +0000 UTC]

Epic? Looks like a short e-mail from me, haha. Shame most people don't write back..... [sigh]
[comic book guy] "I've wasted my life" [/comic book guy]

Cheers for the heads up. It'd be cool if they actually sent it so I could use it. That would be aces.

I started with Cubase by itself and like I said before, you can do a fair bit with found samples and loops. To record your own stuff is when you'll need some more hardware. There are "external soundcards"/Firewire ports that are basically little-ish boxes that allow you to plug in mics and standard audio cables. You have Cubase set up to record what's going in basically. There's also MIDI which is more sending signal information which passes through plug-ins to make the sound. It's easier to go into a MIDI "recording" and tweak any little part, (like when the note was pressed or change a note entirely). Direct audio recordings are fixed, although like Photoshop to a photograph things can still be changed, (cut up, stretched, pitchshifted, filtered).

There's loads to learn, so just having Cubase for a time will keep you busy.

It is short for an e-mail... But this is DA.

I'm waiting on wacom to tell me what pen I need to buy to replace my broken one... You'd think with the sale they are going to get the'd reply to my e-mail. Did you order your Wacom direct from Wacom by the way?

Thanks for that... I'll just get Cubase to start with then.

Apologies for the delay, I've been out of the country. To your country in fact.

Wacom pad was super cheap on Amazon. Checked Play.com and they had it for the same, so for ease I just ordered it from there. I still don't have it, though I did receive a 'we came with post but after stamping on it it still didn't fit through your dirty box... come and get it yourself!'.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VOLT-reborn In reply to CopyPasteRepeat [2009-06-27 20:42:53 +0000 UTC]

No problem Ad.

Mum ordered a Bamboo from wacom the same time as my new Pen and it was here in less than 3 days I was well happy, Unfortunatly they don't make the Felt nibs for my Pen. Bummer!

That's one thing we don't get here is the 'we came with post but after stamping on it, it still didn't fit through your dirty box... come and get it yourself!' notes.

where did you go? I like how you call it MY country like I own France now I live here. I'm planning on coming back for good this year (if all goes well).

CopyPasteRepeat In reply to VOLT-reborn [2009-07-01 20:38:15 +0000 UTC]

Bamboo came today. Too hot to do anything though. I'll crank it up later.

I went to Charols... north of avignon. Made some friends online and met up with them. Safe!

I heard about you coming back, but I assume even you don't know when yet...

I might be moving out soon. Only going a few miles further out from the centre though. Nothing dramatic.

VOLT-reborn In reply to CopyPasteRepeat [2009-07-02 21:28:41 +0000 UTC]

Too hot to sit on your arse and plug in a tablet! and I though It was hot here when I was mixing ciment in the sun!

Very safe! I've heard of Avignon but unsure exactly where it is. North of me I think.

It's looking Like a September thing but That is if all goes well and I can afford it If not I hitch a ride with My folks as usual in November.

Where you thinking of moving? Chapeltown? nice place if you ignore the shootings and drug drealers.

I went to go look at the new place and it looks promising, (it's still under construction y'see). I should be able to move in end of August beginning of September.

Had a bez on the tablet. It was thoroughly what I expected, haha. I'm sure I'll find a good use for it.

Got to your deviantART-profile through your homepage.
Disappointed to see as great pictures (since here are not really some) as songs/remixes from you, but still got to say that i love your style of making songs. This kind of Breakbeat should be get an own name, if it doesn't have already.
