I really have been meaning to, I meant to the second i read this, but then i was like "omg opportunity, must choose something epic!" and i decided to think on it. Bad idea, given my level of procrastination.

its treating me decently, just snowed this morning though. go figure. I busted out the tablet again, going to start some art up.... dont have a clue where to begin again. Think i might start over with some basic tuts. Any suggestions?

lol I hate snow here in England, not because it's cold and inevitably slippery, but because people can't handle a little powder and the whole country grinds to a screaming halt...
as for tuts, my personal favourite is Feng Zhu's page on youtube, he's giving away an awful lot of information that you would normally have to pay for! [link] the tips and techniques he shows are useful in all kinds of digital art, not just concept design.
hope that helps

Dude that is amazing. I was thinking of spending the 500$ for a years access to Gnomon workshop, but i am going to have to watch all 50+ of those first! Thank you so much! Ironically it was snowing here too! Its like people dont know how to drive in the snow. Its not just england! However thats surprising since england is so rainy, snow is a natural step passed that, you think they would have adapted

Yeah Feng's a god among teachers
I did the Gnomon thing for 2 years, and although I found it really helpful, there was also just so much stuff there that I kind of got swamped and didn't know where to jump next, it was pretty daunting, that said, I'd definately do it again someday.
No-one knows what to do when the white stuff comes down, it's really annoying lol.
As it's been a couple of weeks since I last replied, how are you getting on with Feng's tutorials?

Ive watched about 5 of the videos ( all their parts). Ive done some work, but saved nothing. The rust is so thick i am sloughing it off lol. Anyways, thanks for the info. So you think gnomon is worth 500$ a year? It does seem massive. I know there is 3 Dylan Coles DVD's on it that are like 60$each so thats like 180$ alone. Hmmm. I have been watching a lot of videos from ImagineFX too, lately. Watched Noah Bradley's "Painting a imposing castle", pretty amazing. Wish it had audio though.
How is your class going? You haven't uploaded much lately. Out of curiousity, where is this class taking you? Not like literally, but objective-wise, are you aiming to be say a Matte painter, or say a video game conceptualist? (Auto correct is saying i made that word up, i like it. lol) Your style is becoming very defined and it seems it can go any way at this point!
Anyways, It's the weekend, i plan to get something done! Maybe an imposing castle, since its the freshest? haha. We shall see. I am thinking of giving Painter XII a demo run.

Sometimes I find Feng's voice easier to take in short bursts lol.
Gnomon is alot of money, but there's sooooo much info there that it's worth it. I did 2 years of it, but life kinda threw me a curveball and I ended up working retail and had/have no time for it, thus can't warrant shelling out the wedge for it, otherwise I definately would do it again. Noah Bradley's stuff is wicked, I bought a book from 3D total called Digital Painting Techniques 1, it features Noah's painting "The trials of devotion" and has a full voice over. It's really really good.
My class finished back in November, and I went from randomly noodling around and ending up with a special effects covered mess, to doing long, thought out studies that involved photography and a decent grasp of composition. Since the course ended I've kind of gone backwards a little, but that's my problem, nothing to do with the course. I feel like I need a more creative environment to really fulfil what I see as untapped potential.
I've always thought of myself as an illustrator first, and a concept artist second, but I've turned my hand to loads of stuff, comics, storyboards, character design, portraits, tattoos, web design, graphic design, I could go on lol, at this point, I really don't know... I just want a creative job lol. In fact, I'm about to apply for a concept artist job in the UK, it's with a company whose work I like, and they're looking for intermediate level people, which I feel I am (on a good day lol) so I hope I've got a chance of getting the job. If not I'm gonna jump in front of a bus.
haha I'm already halfway to the next weekend as I write this... hmmm.... I'm probably gonna submit my CV then finish writing a song I'm working on, just can't figure out the solo section. After that? Sleep. Sweet sleep.
I haven't tried painter XII yet, but by all accounts it's really really good. Let me know what you think of it.
Thanks for all the kind comments by the way, I don't always sound like it, but I really do appreciate it.

Wow, Amazing. Yeah, Feng sometimes can be a bit hard to understand. I find myself replaying a certain piece of the videos atleast once per video. lol.
i work full time at the moment and the rest of the time i spend with my wife, she can be quite the distraction. I usually get off a few hours before her and i use that time to watch the videos online, and reply to you ;D I did finally pick up the Wacom pen once again, and i have been making some scraps. I dont know if i could devote as much time as i would like to Gnomon, if i got it. I have CS5 Design special so i have everything except movie editing, and i'm going to be making a website for someone in my family using dreamweaver. I havent yet downloaded Paint XII, i intend to though. This weekend looks promising.
I havent gone past an hour on anything since i started painting again. I would love to do concept art, that would be my ideal job. But i know that its not something im going to learn in a classroom, I know its from experiance and working hard, and for some reason that is... well, daunting. And so thus, fear is why i steered away from the wacom. But i cant hide from it forever, not if this is something i actually want to do. I tried out the castle, as i said, never went over an hour, and thus, it was more bloblike than castlelike. lol. In the fall, im going to go to scool for mixed digital media, As you said, "Loads of stuff". Haha. Web design, so i can help my dad in more complex ways, Character Design, 3D designing and modelling (I own 3ds Max and Maya, but havent touched them ). But concept art for video games? Thats not really taught in a traditional school, and the ways it is taught are dang expensive. Id like my concepts to be a bit more matte-like, photorealistic with a hint of artistry, Id like to take fantastical ideas and make them look believable. This is why i think Gnomon would be such a steal, It can teach me 3ds max, matte painting, landscape and character design, and all these things, if i can devote the time necessary to it.
My favorite art book is "Bold Vision's" by Gary Tonge, GREAT book, i recommend it whole heartidly. I bought it a few weeks ago after having checked it out at the library 2 times and extending those check outs to the max. lol. He even uses 3d as a basis for perspective in some of the paintings! Its like a sign, right? haha.
I wish you the best of luck in your job search. Out of curiousity, is it Atomhawk? I know they are a british design company with some beautiful stuff. Remember to bring your kickass portfolio, thats the key. One of my favorite artists on here, recenetly had [link] made. Its a cool idea. Not sure how your portfolio is made, though, so, just passing along a suggestion. You should pictures of yours, thatd be cool to see. Haha. But im sorry, i dont want you to jump in front of a bus. So if this job does not pan out, i forbid it, MMkay? The next one will. Or the next one after that, so. Keep on keepin' on.
And really, i love your work. I leave the comments because i want you to know it is inspirational. Id like to be at your level in a few years, and i know id like all the feedback i could muster, and id like someone like me, you know? Haha. I may not be as critical, but i look for the beauty in art not the flaws. If the beauty outweighs the flaws, then they fade into the background, and the peace as a whole is great.

Whoa, I had to grab a coffee before I read that reply lol
That's a hell of a lot of demands on your time, I'm not surprised you've not gone for gnomon; if I had those things I'd not do it either!!
What I found when painting is if you've gotten to a stage where you hate what you've got, no matter how long its taken; flatten all the layers and start again, over the top of it. There's ALWAYS something worth taking away from a defunct sketch. As for not getting past an hour, don't let that be a wall; just save it and come back to it later. I often find I don't have an hour to do something, so I aim to get a pass finished before I save it and do the other things I have to do. So maybe I'll do the sketch and first and second refinement passes before I save it to return to it later. Goals are often a better way of working for me; give it a try and see what you think.
Gary's a great guy, and a really good tutor; I haven't bought the book yet, but always fancied it lol.
haha yeah it was Atomhawk; they turned me down, but offered me some feedback, so once that comes through I'll see what I'm doing wrong That portfolio is the nuts, I bet it cost a pretty penny though lol.
Thanks man, I really appreciate that, I hope I stay inspiring
