I'm going to try and create a dress to sell on Etsy someday. It will probably be an original design and not based off any of my current sketches, but nonetheless I'll try my signature Civil War/Victorian style. Would like this to be a two piece with a puffed sleeve blouse and checkered skirt over nylon or tulle and a 6 hoop crinoline, with some cute and attractive ribbons to match, but that's just an idea and probably won't match the final design. I really need to find some necessary fabrics and a sewing machine first. XP

Learning to sew is not difficult, but I wouldn't recommend starting with a period ball gown. They take a LOT of fabric/notions and are really expensive to create. (For example: You'll need 6-12 yards of fabric for a Civil War styled gown. The low quality stuff is usually $8-$13 a yard and high quality fabric can get as expensive as you can dream of. Then you also have to buy the hoop skirt, the boning, the hooks, the ribbon, the trim, etc. It all adds up fast.)
Simple modern style skirts are a great place to start. You could also find a commercial pattern with similar style lines to the bodice you'd like to make: maybe a peasant blouse or a princess seamed top. Start with a cheap fabric like muslin to get the hang of things. If you start big, you might get frustrated and not want to continue. Starting small and working your way up will help you learn the skills to tackle something larger. Good luck!

Ah ok. I still want to design something poofy, but maybe a 1950s knee length skirt might also be a good start. Probably won't use muslin for that but maybe a fabric that's cute and cheap enough.
I dunno, what fabric would you recommend for a twirlable fifties skirt worn by a high school girl or young 20-something? XDD

If you want to go fifties, try a circle skirt. There's a lot of tutorials out there for them. (Lots of blogs with photos and a ton of videos on Youtube!) Definitely start with cotton though- it's the best fabric for beginners. Doesn't necessarily have to be muslin (which is 100% cotton,) but a cotton will make learning much easier! It doesn't fray too much and won't slip and slide as you're trying to mark and cut.

Yes I'll take your word for it if I have time! Right now we are putting up with snow and post holiday sales so I'll have to wait it out first. XP

I haven't! I'm in the middle of working on a musical so I'm holding off until my Thanksgiving break. One of my professors keeps mentioning it though so I can't wait to start!

Happy belated!
Ah you live in Michigan, huh? I've been vacationing northwest of that state in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, but now I must get ready to leave. I'll miss Oshkosh!

Gee, I could have sworn I posted a comment... :/
Anyway is it possible to post a photo of you in the costume requested? Thanks!

Well I want to try and make a real life version of this gown:
planxtafroggie.deviantart.com/…
Except I want to draw the same dress not fluttering about, though as you can tell there is this massive skirt worn over hoops. XDD
Just want to see what the dress looks like over a hoopskirt before being shipped, as I want to get the length of the skirt right before designing my own big petticoat! ^^
Not a cross dresser btw, just want to attempt to create a big puffy gown and sell it on Etsy. Trying to make real life versions of all my designs... ^^

I have photos of a couple dresses over hoop skirts in my gallery. There's is a Beauty and Beast ballgown, a seven tier white ruffle skirt, and a red satin ball gown. All are worn over a five hoop skirt.

Oh ok. Just wanted to see if you could make the dress long enough for a hoopskirt to fit. Anyway the real request will be on Etsy, and won't be made until Spring. ^^

Oh you're asking about a commission? Yes, it's very easy to make a dress to fit a hoop skirt. (I'm still trying to figure out what you're asking. Are you asking me to make a skirt so you can sell it yourself on Etsy? Etsy is a site for artists to sell their work. If I made a gown for you, you would not be able to sell it on Etsy yourself. Ebay perhaps, but why commission a dress that you're just going to sell?)

Yeah, I'm not exactly clear on sentencing the first couple times, sorry. >.>
I'm still new to Etsy. If the point of Etsy is to sell, not buy, I'll just have to make this whole dress myself. I was just asking if you would make the dress first, then sell it to me, and I could make the hoop crinoline to fit underneath. But all that would do is make things far too complicated for both of us.
So yeah, I'll just make the dress myself and then sell it. Would be a nice learning experience anyway. XDD

It's a marketplace so you can go there to both sell and buy, but you cannot sell things that you didn't make yourself. (Unless it's an accessory that goes with the thing you made.)
You might want to go with making the skirt yourself and buying the hoop. (The skirt is more of a beginner thing. Hoops are difficult piece to make) Also, there are so many places where you can get them for cheap. (Sort of like buying gloves or shoes, it's easier to have someone who specializes in those make them.) I get my hoops from Angel's Bridal on Ebay: stores.ebay.com/ANGELS-BRIDAL-…

Yeah I'll look into it if I get the chance to design a costume for someone in my area but right now things are looking pretty bleak.... XP
