I've discovered that the secret to twitter (and social media in general) is actually not to market yourself at all - but to genuinely focus on other peoples' work that interests you, promote others and take interest in them, and share what you're passionate about constantly. Eventually, those of like mind and those who appreciate what you do for them and want to help you will gather around, and you'll slowly build yourself into a great community.
At least, that's the theory I've heard from several highly successful bloggers, etc... And having applied it to networking in my field, it's done wonders for me, although I haven't had any real "payoff" yet, except in the mode of personal satisfaction and discovering new artists whose work I enjoy (such as you!) - but I'm in for the long haul (another big principle of social media I've heard from several sources, professional and otherwise), and I'm willing to wait, while I work on my craft.
Twitter is great for that network of connections, but not stellar for protracted 1 on 1 conversations. That's what places like this are for.

Agreed. And intuitively, I understand everything you said and have been building myself up to working toward that aim.
For me it mostly comes down to time. I must make more time. Or rather, devote more of it to Twitter. I'm currently so much more invested here in dA. Need to branch out. Balance everything.
