Is it true you don't have the Easter Bunny in France? A bell comes from Rome and give you chocolate? Tell me it isn't true!

Avistew In reply to mollygrace [2009-04-15 07:17:11 +0000 UTC]
It is true lol.
During Lent, the bells in Rome don't ring. The story says it's because they're on their way to bring chocolate. Stores sell chocolate bells just like you'd have chocolate bunnies.
HOWEVER! Recently, American culture has had a big influence here, so now we /also/ have chocolate bunnies and know about the Easter bunny and so on. So we have both now.
We also don't have a tooth fairy, but mice that collect teeth to make furniture. So it's not the tooth fairy but the tooth mouse that collects our teeth from under our pillow

How does a bell carry chocolate? No arms.
Mice? Do they pay you? The Tooth Fairy leaves money under your pillow.

Avistew In reply to mollygrace [2009-04-17 11:25:29 +0000 UTC]
Yes, the mice leave money too. It's debated whether they find the money humans lose, or if they make their own money
The bells have no arms, but they're big hollow stuff. I always assumed they filled themselves up with eggs or something. I'm sure if they can fly, they can tell gravity to shut up and not let the eggs fall xD
Either way, it's not weirder than a rabbit that lay eggs and carries them in a kangaroo-like pouch on his (her, I guess?) belly

mollygrace In reply to Avistew [2009-04-17 17:58:09 +0000 UTC]
First of all, the rabbit does not lay the eggs. They're just dyed eggs. Maybe magic. Not sure. But he carries them in his Easter Basket. And he's a Bunny, not a rabbit.
The basket is a very important part of Easter. That's what kids wake up to in the morning. A basket filled with eggs, chocolate, other treats and sometimes small toys. It's like a Christmas stocking, but a basket.

Wait, there is a difference between a bunny and a rabbit? I thought bunny was the kid word for rabbit lol.
I could swear I had seen pictures of a bunny with a pouch carrying the eggs... My mistake I guess.
We do have baskets with eggs, but that's because the hen lays the eggs in a basket.
And ours aren't died. They're just chocolate. I guess the wrappers have nice colours though.
And we get other stuff out of chocolate. For instance this year I got a big fish, with inside "seafood" (fish, lobsters, clams, all out of chocolate and nut-filled).
Hens and bells are the most common though, and small eggs are the most common "stuffing".

A bunny is a baby rabbit. Like a puppy or a kitty. The Easter Bunny is often portrayed as an adult in cartoons, but his name is still always Easter Bunny.
We have chocolate eggs, too. Like Cadbury Eggs, they're chocolate with a creamy white and yellow filling. And Robin's Eggs are tiny solid chocolate eggs. Plus lots of marshmallow, cream and peanut butter eggs and bunnies (small). The major things, though are the dyed eggs and your one, big chocolate bunny.
Most families have egg dying as a family activity a little bit before Easter. It's super fun. I've done it with my daughter for 2 years now. She mostly just drops the whole eggs in the cup of dye at this point. (Oh, very important, the eggs are hard-boiled by the parents in advance.) Also, you can use clear crayons as a dye resist, add stickers, boil on clear plastic pictures and scenes, or wrap paper labels on them. After that, the kids may or may not go on an Easter egg hunt, usually Saturday or Sunday. Churches usually do them, but anyone can. I had one this year in my backyard with three kids. The kids go out with their empty baskets and hunt for eggs under bushes and behind trees n' stuff.
On Easter morning, the kids wake up to filled baskets with the eggs they made, the chocolate and their big chocolate bunny. Many adults still have their bunny eating methods. Some prefer hollow, others solid. Some start with the ears, others the tail. It's all very personal.

That sounds nifty
We didn't celebrate Easter very often in my family, but here is how it went when we did:
First, we didn't have the "painting eggs" thing, and didn't use real eggs. However, we did have a hunt.
Each of the kids (we're 4) have a "big" easter gift, and on top of that there were lots of small candy (sugar angels, small eggs, chocolate money, nougat...) that was to share (usually a small bag for each of us, sometimes a big bag for the four of us).
All the treats were hidden beforehand in the appartment (we never had a garden), and we would separate to look for them. We had a meeting spot where we would bring everything we found.
However, we also had a trick to it. If we found the "big Easter gift" of another kid, we could decide to take it and hide it somewhere else... somewhere they had already looked, for instance. That made the whole game more interesting.
It was a lot of fun. On occasion, when we were on vacation somewhere, we'd have a treasure hunt. You probably have these, too. You get a paper hinting to a place to look, where you find another paper directing you to another place, and so on until the big treasure. Except every small paper would also have a small treat (chocolate, candy, fruit) and the treasure was of course our big easter treat. It was a lot of fun too.
Here is a link to the most common chocolate things: hen, egg and bell [link]
Collections were sometimes organised in forests and parks, but the only ones I can remember was before my family started celebrating Easter, and after I was to old to be allowed to participate, so I never took part in one. I think these used actual eggs, though.

A hunt in an apartment is a great idea. I always lived in apartments and we didn't go to church, so I never did an easter Egg hunt as a kid. We don't do treasure hunts for Easter, but it sounds like fun.
I actually need to get out to the East Bay (about an hour and a half away) to pick up Easter baskets a friend's mom made for me and my daughter. I had no chocolate bunny this year.
