Hey Ethan,

Thank you. I didn't notice until now that you had sent the Happy Birthday message, I glanced at it and assumed it was automatically generated by deviantart.com. My apologies.

You might want to join our group  arsmilitaria.deviantart.com/

Its specialised on high detailed military illustrations and it will host only the finest deviations and will gather some of the most talented artists.

And yes Ive already checked your gallery .

Man pls. finish this work! There are so few serious works on the hellenistic period here on da that is mandatory to do this.

apollonides.deviantart.com/art…

What are your references for this and what episode is depicting?

You should do more of these

Thanks for your invitation. Yes, I'd like to join your group. I will see if I can find time to finish that painting. I was really struggling with it for months trying to get the colors and lighting to look right and keeping the rows of soldiers separate. That was my first battle scene. Anyway I'm basically concentrating on mastering the basics of digital painting and getting production speed up to the point that I'm confident to take on regular commissions and meet deadlines as a pro illustrator and potentially a concept artist. So I'm moving on to other works that can be cranked out more quickly for the time being. We'll see if I get back to it. I have a somewhat more updated version I need to upload.

The references for the historical context are Wikipedia articles, and for the arms and armor I relied mostly on Peter Conolly's Greece and Rome at War and Warfare in the Classical World by John Warry. It portrays a hypothetical battle between troops of Diodotus I Soter and Seleucid troops in the mid 3rd century. (I'm not sure if you looked at the description in my portfolio, zsmithart.daportfolio.com/gall… , as opposed to my gallery) Whether Antiochus II Theos was still alive when Diodotus began his rebellion is unclear from what I can understand. So this particular war is a bit obscure. I was drawn mainly to the idea of such a dramatic scene. Fucking elephant warfare in the Hindu Kush mountains!!

Sorry for my verbosity.

Yup the hellenistic era is the most fascinating imo, even from the roman pov. Legndary feuds and generals, large scale miliatry operations etc. , some of the most finest diplomacy   , the first colides between romans and hellenistic kingdoms.  Damn they should make a movie on this era.

I like the costume design reminds a bit of the "Winkie guards" from the Wizard of Oz. Thank you for the fave as well.

Absolutely! I like your style. I noticed that you live in the Cincinnati area. So do I. I'm trying to get started in Concept Art and Illustration and am teaching myself digital painting right now.

Glad you like those Roman pictures, but yeah thank the real artists. Unfortunately people won't stop bothering me about the ownership issue. I've clearly stated that they're not my work on the main page, and are simply meant for my reference. Besides that, enjoy!
