For ATEC, anyway. And I don't think the rest of A&H offers anything outside of Fine Arts. So, no illustration, no character design or preproduction... There's just a big, nasty gap.

That's terrifying. I love this school, but they're putting me at an even greater disadvantage by doing this- I love 2D, and might have to go elsewhere to get my fix. I hope they realize that 2D is the foundation for all 3D art sooner or later and start bringing things back.
And besides, they can start to produce all of the lovely animations they want, but they'll look off if there isn't good design and concepts involved.
Your gallery is pretty awesome, by the way. It's inspiring that someone with talent in the 2D arena can come out of such a 2D hating place

It's not really fair to say it's a 2D-hating place, let's get that out in the open, first of all. Monica Evans, one of the big names in the program, wants 2D titles to come out of the program. She wants more of a 2D focus. Right now, from her perspective, it seems it's largely an issue of understaffing and no one to really MAKE the courses we need. Bruce Barnes is also always going to try and keep things going on the underside.
You can still make a name for yourself as a 2D artist, you just have to know where to look. I know Game Production Lab is in need of a few 2D animators and artists next semester, definitely take a look into that. Bruce Barnes is usually holding an A-Z Animation course, which has a heavy reliance on 2D animation. There's something for everybody; You just have to talk to the right people.

I've actually talked to Dr. Evans, who did express that idea. (And out of the ideas pitched for GameLab yesterday, many were 2D). It's just a little odd how split the program is on the idea of 2D.
I do agree that it is understaffed, but instead of getting rid of the 2D classes, they should consider adding another 2D artist into the alleged 9 Professorial hires they're planning.
I'm definitely looking into GameLab for the future, but I'm only a freshman, so I'd like to get into more of the flow of college and work on my art skills a little before I take on such a huge responsibility. Otherwise, it's something I'm definitely looking forward to participating in.

There's a lot of politics, a lot of grants, a lot of projects that have been floating around the program. It's a very complicated issue which has led to the changes being somewhat sensical when it comes to the success of the program as a whole. It's not... ideal considering all students, especially those who wish to dive into 2D art. Just keep looking, possibly look around for grants and scholarships for both ATEC and other schools, and see where you can end up.
