hey sup, how's your sheridan portfolio going along?

Andaltno In reply to JSketchies [2011-03-02 00:50:58 +0000 UTC]

Hi there

Well, my health's been pretty bad so I decided that I'm not going to be going to Sheridan next year... which is sad. Instead I'm going to be attending a local animation program. It's just an associates degree, and I don't know how far I'll go with it, but it ought to help me a lot with improvement and get me on the right track for animation. My life's been crazy... so, I guess unfortunately, sheridan is out for now, but that doesn't mean I won't transfer there later.

I was thinking of doing an animation associates in my hometown, an illustration associates elsewhere, then transferring to sheridan. It's a lot of school I suppose, but we'll see how things go.
What about you, how's school going for you?

JSketchies In reply to Andaltno [2011-03-02 01:34:50 +0000 UTC]

shucks that sucks. really hope you get better. animation and illustration sounds like a lot of work how many years? you sure you can handle them both cuz it can be stressing (obviously). will those programs be at another school? or will it be at a workshop? sorry for al lthe questions bombardment. but still good luck and take it easy.

school's okay i got a stand up comedy presentation tomorrow which i can't skip no matter the reason which puts a damper for my portfolio preparations. tired as hell, can't seem to get myself up at 8 to go to school which is a problem haha. portfolio is going along slowly, i hafta go to sheridan on thursday to submit it providing i finish all requirements in time. though i applied for art fundamentals just in case, still waiting for an answer since i just applied yesterday .

so far im on the hand drawings, just finished my first one ( also my first drawing LOL ).

i also am attending a canada skills competition for animation next thursday, which is scaring me. given 8 hours to create a proper animation. great scott its gonna produce roadkill. zoom film aniamtion is going slowly so hopefully i get the portfolio done, training done then work on it. i'll scan the portfolio on here when im done for your thoughts.

how's school on your end? springs coming which means no more slippery ice!!!

Andaltno In reply to JSketchies [2011-03-02 03:06:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if I'll do illustration or not, it's really iffy =/ I still -really- want to go to sheridan... I mean, next year in this animation program, I think for the sake of my health and not working up a debt, I'll take just two clases a semester, and then my private art lessons and open figure drawing. The classes I'd take first semester would be Basic Drawing for Animators and Digital Life Drawing, then second semester would be Principles of Character Development and Intermediate Digital Life Drawing. And then my private lessons would focus on building drawing skills and making my portfolio, while Open Figure Drawing would just be additional figure drawing practice.

it's great that you're getting your portfolio done though, I'm happy for you. I look forward to seeing it. And you know, even if it didn't work out for animation right away, I did hear that the art fundamentals program was good. And you could do Art Fundamentals while taking that Animation Portfolio workshop in Toronto, too Surely, that much art and portfolio work would get you right up to the level you need.

Despite taking only a few classes this final semester, school is still hard! I've got an advanced placement art history class that is pretty difficult (but a lot of fun) and I've got a Short Fiction english class which is having me write short stories; I mean, I come up with stories all the time, but I just want to draw them out! I can see exactly how the story's happening in my head visually, but using words to describe it is really selling the potential of the story short for me. There's only so much I can say about the intense colors my character is seeing in the sky until I just go "argh, I could just paint this and it'd be so easy to understand!"

Art class is the hardest of all, of course... we're doing really, really tough observational drawings. My first project was to do a tonal graphite still life of a tricycle wrapped in white cloth tied together by twine. It was ridiculously hard to shade, and I ended up getting th proportions wrong. Now I'm doing a colored pencil drawing of a photo of a bunch of bell peppers, and there's just so much work and skill required for these; skill I'm trying really hard to develop, but often falling short on... so yeah.

I ended up getting rejected from Sheridan, actually, because apparently foreign students need to provide evidence of having graduated already before they can enter the school. So, even if I had the skills to get into animation at sheridan, I wouldn't have been able to go for at least a year.

Life's hard! School is hard. I just hope I can fulfill my ambitions as an animator someday. I keep having to remind myself that I'm only 17 and there's still so much for me to figure out.

its good to hear from you again, thought you forgot. well schools going on and stuffs been happening, finally went to a party that had beer. anyways, i talked with my counsellor and she said im gonna have to go through another year before i can go to sheridan. qq. its been bittersweet, but hope bout you? ill bet that cold of yours is gone i hope. " wink wink, knudge, knudge"

Andaltno In reply to JSketchies [2010-10-10 00:49:56 +0000 UTC]

The cold left, but not without messing me up for a few days at school. Otherwise, school has been pretty nice! I've already been learning a lot in Art and Art History, my private art lessons are going well, and I just started Figure Drawing today and that was hard but engaging. My academic classes have been reasonably fun too.

You don't necessarily have to go through another year before moving on to college... You could do what I'm going to do. The Art Fundamentals Program. Plus you get free access to figure drawing sessions outside of regular class periods Oh! And I just discovered something a week or so ago that I really want to do alongside Art Fundamentals: [link]

I've heard it's like the number one thing you can do if you're worried about getting a good portfolio done for animation school. I think if I do Art Fundamentals, I can just take the GoTrain up to Toronto once a week and take this course. You're lucky that you have access to it now while you're still in high school. I'll let the website speak for itself, so take a look.

It's not that I forgot, I did actually send you a note, but I never got a reply. I think that maybe DA screwed up and you never got it? Ah well, we're talking now, so it's fine

JSketchies In reply to Andaltno [2010-10-10 15:43:53 +0000 UTC]

cool cool! had my first crack at grade 9 art, it was hard and something i can get used to the first few weeks, but its decent. the teacher didnt even know i was in the 12th grade heh.

i still have to take another year to take grade 12 art, calculus, math data functions or whatever, guidance said i must if i want to meet the qualifications. for any uni or coll.

i have heard of the art fundamentals program, but i also heard it can be pricy, though it did not mention on the site i think, it was said somewhere, like 500-700 bucks.

ah yeah, i didn't get that note, DA is indeed screwing up. haha

Andaltno In reply to JSketchies [2010-10-10 19:31:12 +0000 UTC]

That sucks! I only had to take Algebra 1 and Geometry to fulfill my math requirement, and I can easily get into any college down here.
Art Fundamentals is just a year of college art, so it is pricy as most colleges are. I still want to go for it though, and if I get a visa with that program then I can do the Portfolio Workshop thing in Toronto.

Well good luck in your art class, I hope you get a lot out of it. What kinds of things are you covering in it?

The beginning basics are always kind of boring. But it ought to get better and more challenging as the year goes on.
Nice drawing by the way, it looks like you have a lot of art up that you've hidden. Not to pry, but why did you hide all that art?

JSketchies In reply to Andaltno [2010-10-10 22:10:26 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i was at the point where drawing illustrations, really didnt matter to me anymore, and leaned on more towards animation. but decided what the hell, from there on you can only improve. also was a bit pissed at how i draw better on paper than on tablet.

Andaltno In reply to JSketchies [2010-10-19 16:52:00 +0000 UTC]

Nah, they look good. In any case it's nice to make new art and compare it to older art to see the progress. I am very nerdy and have three or four comic ideas bouncing around in my head right now-- and one of them is a Pokemon comic. Ha. Hope you don't find that extremely lame. Anyway, it is for a group my friend started called Pokedemic where it's Pokemon plus zombies! A survival comic. So that is less lame...

JSketchies In reply to Andaltno [2010-10-19 19:55:26 +0000 UTC]

pokemon was my childhood :> lol zombie pokemon, that would definetly be epic, it would be lame if it was'nt made.

Andaltno In reply to Megawattt [2010-06-03 01:08:34 +0000 UTC]

Ah, just working on finishing Junior year so that I can get on to senior year. I changed my major from Creative Writing to Visual Art and they accepted me into the senior level class, so I'm excited about that. Riding lessons and art lessons are what I'll be doing this summer in addition to finding a second job and visiting the art school I want to go to.
