No need to apologize. People get defensive about creations they like. However, as someone who also has an array of characters that I've poured my heart and soul into: While I'm fine with people doing fanart of that character, I do not like it when people 'think' they know the character. Or believe the character shouldn't change or is fine the way they are.
The thing with creativity is, sometimes as we grow, the characters will grow too. As difficult as it is to handle: These are not your characters, they are someone else's. If they want to redesign said character or change them, it is 100% up to them in the end. NOT you.
