Hey, man. Sorry if I seemed like a jack off when I replied to your comment on my Nocturne photo. That particular day was rough for me and I apologize. For my next Nocturne series, I've decided to change the visual look for it to color thanks to you. It's just getting old I think, so yeah. For Celestial Tomb, it was just to imitate how films were made in the '50's. I'm sorry if I was rude about that.

The environments of the Devil May Cry reboot are unappealing and very unimaginative. I mean, they literally washed the environments with way too many orange and blue hues, and it's clear that they have taken from many other, much better sources. It's just as uninteresting and dull as the rest of the game itself. It's more like, in order to make the environments, Ninja Theory just did the cut-and-paste route for all this. It's more like The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, only swallowed up and regurgitated back out, and slapped with the Devil May Cry name on it.
DMC4's environment, however, is much better and more elaborate. The designers for the game made a fantasy setting, staying true to the rest of the original series, with a touch of gothic in it. The color palette is a lot better, and it doesn't hurt the eyes as much as the DmC reboot does. And it's crafted with a lot more imagination and immersion. It's so much more imaginative than the reboot. There are medieval-baroque-stylized cities, mountains, tropical rainforests, castles, and lots more. It is synonymous with the fantasy genre, and the fantasy genre is synonymous with imagination.Β
The environments in DMC4 really mesh together well, also. If you ever played the game, you know what I'm talking about. The designers for the 4th game really pulled it off in terms of visuals. Magic and fantasy are abound in DMC4. The Devil May Cry reboot pushes all that aside for hard and edgy, with Fox News all over it. And ugh, the reboot and its environment don't go we'll with the rest of the series at all. >.>
DmC: Devil May Cry is an example of a supernatural fantasy video game gone wrong, with lots of fantasy cliches abound. DMC4 shows how a great fantasy-themed video game is supposed to be done. Along with other factors (including the carefree Dante we all know and love), it's no wonder why the 4th installment gained so much popularity among fans of the original series and others.
Thanks for reading.

I did a comparison of the DMC4 SE screenshots and the DmC DE screenshots. Pay attention to the environments:
DMC4 SE screenshots
assets.vg247.com/current//2015β¦
static4.gamespot.com/uploads/oβ¦

DmC DE screenshots

www.gamepur.com/files/images/2β¦
inthegame.nl/wp-content/gallerβ¦
DMC4 SE is much more imaginative and well-crafted in terms of environment design. Makes you feel like you got sucked into the fantasy world of the game itself.
DmC's enviroments are so bland and hard to look at because of an overuse of blues and oranges. DMC4 has a better color palette. And DmC looks like it got regurgitated from other, much better sources.
So, yeah, DMC4 SE wins.Β

yeah, you are right.
after all, it's easy to design an "destroyed urban area".
make houses and then make them in pieces.
it's much harder to have realistically great looking south european baroque/Renaissance buildings

Here are the reasons why Devil May Cry 4 is a Fantasy Video game:
- It has magical elements (There are demons, the Sparda twins have mixed blood of human and demon, the orbs and fragments and vital stars, Nero's glowing arm, etc.)
- The game is set in a imaginary world different from our planet (Although it has buildings and stuff) (Think the High (Epic) Fantasy subgenre)
Β
- There are monsters in this game. And they're based off of mythical creatures and such. Some of the monsters featured in the game are Scarecrows, Wraiths, Lizard Beasts, and Glowing Wolves, for example. And there's one demon in the game that transforms into a dragon, and a gigantic god, not to mention winged angels.
- It's got swords in it! Dante, with Rebellion, Nero, with Red Queen, and Vergil, Yamato.
- The world of DMC4 has many fantastic environments, some of which can only be experienced in an epic Fantasy world: A Gothic town, where demons and demon hunters populate and mingle with each other, a dark, swampy forest that you'll end up in if you take the wrong way out, a jungle/mixed forest environment, snow-choked mountains, and even a temple
- Standard Fantasy genre stuff all around: Centuries-old Religious organization, sorcery possessed by the playable characters (Dante, Nero and Vergil!), ancient evil(s), world full of magical dangers and quest-like adventures, medieval-like buildings and streets, supernatural phenomena (magic), mythical creatures to fight, mystical items, world-shaking events, an imaginative world (Seriously, DMC4 has the very best environments in all of the series, both outside and inside.), and the classic theme of good vs. evil.
In fact, when I looked all around on the internet, many sites agree that all because of these themes that I listed above, Devil May Cry 4 is definitely placed in the fantasy genre of video games.
It's also my POV, ICYDK.

Urban Fantasy.
fantasy elements built on a believable urban environment.
and while you are mostly right, I want to put some personal opinions in some of your examples.
demons and angels (and most thing relating them) are "fantasy" but also they are "theological".
also, good vs evil is played with a spin.

there are still too much quality given to the game's aesthetics and "production values"...
the problem goes on when you read the comment section...
all other critics gave it a 9 or 10... so it's a better game than The Last of Us it seems...

Bad news: DmC: Definitive Edition is coming to PS4 and Xbone with new features and 60fps, though why not from the beginning, we don't know. We do know that Capcom is dying, with only RE Revelations 2, Monster Hunter 4, Street Fighter V and Deep Down being made from the ground up, but even then, Sony is apparently financing SFV.
Good news: Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition will come to PS4 and Xbone with Vergil in it, so I call that a minor victory, right? Then again, Capcom is probably doing good by re-releasing old games if they're truly in financial woes but they have no one to blame but themselves.

1r0zz0 In reply to stevemacqwark [2014-12-18 20:50:32 +0000 UTC]
I do not think SFV is done from the ground up... after all, for create bump maps you have to create a high poly model, and they seem to use a more detailed version based on those same high ploy models from SF4...
and it is on the Unreal Engine 4...so it is pretty much an indie version of street fighter.
and sony is paying for it...
do not get your hopes up for DMC4 hd... it's very probable that DmC hd will sell because fantoys will say "now it's 60fps and with lock on! just like the original!"...
so we will have DmC2...
it's probable that Vergil will be only used as a skin...

π: 0 β©: 1
1r0zz0 In reply to stevemacqwark [2014-12-19 18:36:19 +0000 UTC]
it's because they want to see what sells better to decide what series to continue...
this is because japanese developers are inside a bubble floating somewhere else than earth...
they hardly have contacts with fans, and they base all their decision on the critics voices (even ignoring SALES sometimes...Yakuza series is a prime example) but in case of DmC the critics praised it as jesus second coming, yet is a burning economical failure IN THE COUNTRIES IT WAS MADE FOR!...
so crapcom is only doing the most idiotic thing they always do... the "let's see if there are money somewhere!"
they release both to see what sells better, and then they will continue the series that sells more...of course if they still not only follow the critics again or pull a "megaman legends"...

You know, just by watching the entire cutscene-filled movie of the Devil May Cry reboot, it plays out like a bad episode or season of the CW's Supernatural, Buffy, or Angel, in addition to being a Mortal Instruments/Cassandra Clare rip-off.Β
If Joss Whedon saw the reboot, then he'd sue Ninja Theory for stealing his style from one of his supernatural teen TV dramas. Just shows how unoriginal the reboot is. :sigh:

Rebeccachu-Chan [2014-10-05 02:19:29 +0000 UTC]
Out of the designs of all four original DMC games, I enjoy the look of the feel of the 4th game best. It has really cool-looking 19th Century buildings, ancient evils, dark magic, demons scampering around, secret places, uniquely blended areas (a city, a jungle, snow-capped mountains, a castle), magical demonic beasts (Huge deities! Winged angels! Ice toads! Big lizards!), and all-around won't-happen-in-real-life events (Supernatural phenomena OMG)! It's like a true fantasy world - all this in which I described happens in this game! It's like being in a all-new Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting or a real-life dark fairy tale. And that's why I think the look and setting of Devil May Cry 4 is the most imaginative that Capcom has ever done in the series: They made it look like a pure fantasyland.Β
For the reboot, they ditched the fantasy setting of DMC4 and gave us a city that tries to kill people and an edgy look? Bah, I've seen that done before in Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series. A huge contemporary city with magic all around it. Why couldn't they capture the same imagination and magical place that the internal team at Capcom did? Ninja Theory made the setting of the reboot look more like a run-of-the-mill Low Fantasy urban area, trying to ape Bayonetta. I give credit and many points to Capcom and the DMC4 team for creativity and imagination. Ninja Theory gets nada for being blah. IMO, DMC4's setting is worthy of being put in Fantasyland in a themed amusement park.
Thank you for reading!

well, many elements of DMC4 are taken from DMC1 and expanded.
for example the jungle is from DMC1 (it was supposed to be a forest in the game, it got erased but there is still a room with jungle assets)
that said, DMC4 got scrapped and rewritten few times, and is too bad that the game is just HALF of what it was supposed to be.
but you are 100% right. DMC4 is bloody great in "environment design" (less in Character design...).
NT instead made a "ideological design" for the whole game, and it was to make it look like a early 2000 platformer(edgy "dirty" look, lot of "bizarchitecture" and colored vistas).
and for the few moments it didn't look the ugly gritty remake of Evil Twin (one of my favourite game ever, BTW) it looked just like you said. Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments bad tie in. or any other teen urban fantasy...
the Limbo itself is just a bad(and hellishly confused) mix o Alice Madness Returns, Day Watch and Constantine...
DMC4 in a amusement Park? well... if you go around some Italian cities you can see stuff like that...
just look at this street view:
