they are simply companions :3
like a little friend or even pet. They cannot talk, but they are not witless. I only watched the movie, but it's kinda like in Eragon (without them growing huge all of a sudden ) where they still make natural sounds but they think in words. So they understand speech and can follow orders. When one can read thoughts, one can even communicate with them c:
