Vocab
• Vascular = a plant has specialized tissues called xylem and phloem which moves materials to one part of the plant.
• Nonvascular =a plant that depends on a process of diffusion and osmois to move material from one part of the plant to another.
• Angiosperm=a plant the produces seeds in flowers
• Gymnosperm=a plant that produces seeds but not flowers
• Taproot=a type of root that consists of one main foot that grows downward, with many smaller branch roots coming out of it
• Fibrous=a type of root in which there are several roots of the same size that spread out from the base of the stem
• Xylem=a special plant tissue that transports water and minerals from one part of the plant to another
• Petals=the often colorful structures on a flower that are usually involved in attracting pollinators
• Stamen=the male reproductive system that consists of a filament topped by a pollen producing anther
• Anther=the pollen bearing part of the stamen width
• Filament=the stalk like portion of a stamen, supporting the anther.
• Sepal=One of the separate, usually green parts forming the calyx of a flower.
• Pistil=the ovule-bearing or seed-bearing female organ of a flower, consisting when complete of ovary, style, and stigma.
• Stigma=the part of a pistil that receives the pollen.
• Style=a narrow, usually cylindrical and more or less filiform extension of the pistil, which, when present, bears the stigma at its apex.
• Ovary=the enlarged lower part of the pistil in angiospermous plants, enclosing the ovules or young seeds
• Ovule=a rudimentary seed.
• Pollination=the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma.
• Fertilization=the union of male and female gametic nuclei.
• Chlorophyll=the green coloring matter of leaves and plants, essential to the production of carbohydrates by photosynthesis, and occurring in a bluish-black form
• Cellular respiration= The series of metabolic processes by which living cells produce energy through the oxidation of organic substances Stomata
• Transpiration= the passage of water through a plant from the roots through the vascular system to the atmosphere.
• Tropism= an orientation of an organism to an external stimulus, as light, esp. by growth rather than by movement.
• Phototropism= an orienting response to light
• Gravitropism = oriented growth with respect to the force of gravity
