Description
I am really happy with this one. I've never gotten fire to look... transparent(?) before. I didn't just want a wall of fire behind him, I wanted there to be some grounding, context, an idea that there is stuff around his inferno. Chuffed.
------------
Here we are, we've made it to part 3. The conclusion. These writing exercises have really been helping me I think. Understanding what I want to keep, what I want to change, and what I want to leave on the cutting room floor. For sure I still have a lot of work to do with them. I've already looked at the stuff I did last month and gone, "Nope, let's try again from the top." and normally that discourages me, but this time I feel good about it. I think if I can really flesh out my ideas for a 'season 1' I can do pretty much anything. Anyway, enough fussing, here we go!
-----------
As the two touched down a riotous cheering erupted. Alexis stepped back as beach-goers rushed Ferris; patting his back and offering him drinks and telling him hello. The big bonfire bash had only just begun but it looked like most of the people here had been partying all day.
Alexis was a bit nervous coming to this celebration but no one seemed to be paying her too much mind so far. Suddenly a hand from the crowd reached out and pulled her along. It was Ferris. He guided her through the mass to a surprisingly large pit that had been dug into the sand.
"Check it out!" He said.
The pit was full of all kinds of flammable material. Old fences, broken chairs, foliage, driftwood, you name it.
Alexis peered into the hole.
"These bonfires are great for getting rid of materials that cost too much to ship off the island." Ferris explained.
"Oh." Alexis had never considered Ferris would think so functionally about his ability.
He continued to tow her over to a spot not too close but not too far from the pit. "You're the guest of honor, so you should get the best seat in the house."
"What!? Me!? Why!?" She blushed a little.
Ferris brought his hand to his chin like he was thinking of something, "Hmmm, because I said so. I don't want you to miss out on the show! Lay out the blanket and get comfortable, i'll be back in a bit."
He took off and landed triumphantly on the railing of a lifeguard tower. Alexis though it was curious that he didn't leave his bag with her.
He spread his crimson wings out far for all to see. The lowering sun illuminated them as if they were already on fire.
"Are you ready!" He shouted over the already deafening crowd. Everybody yelled back in a slur of excitement and joy. "We wont stop till the" and in unison the crowd joined in "LAST EMBER DIES!"
With that Ferris hopped off the tower and flew up, higher and higher.
People gathered around the pit, looking up to him. Bewildered tourists gawked from the streets. The crowd grew quieter and quieter.
Suddenly a burst off light ignited above as Ferris was engulfed in flames. People started shouting in revelry again. He hovered only for a moment more and shot down like a comet straight into the kindling. A blast of heat washed over Alexis as the pile was immediately consumed in an inferno. The crowd threw their arms up in the air and the raucous festivities resumed. They danced and ate and enjoyed each others company by Ferris's light.
Alexis patiently watched them all as she thought to herself, "Is this what it's supposed to be like?" She sat by herself staring into the flames which grew brighter and brighter as the night grew darker and darker.
-----------------------
Ferris burned his way down the middle of the pile and hollowed out a place for him in the center where his fire couldn't reach. He folded his wings away and placed the bag in the ashy sand. His face was starkly somber as he gazed down and finally unzipped it. It was mostly full of pages of writing, as well as a worn out shirt and a dogeared photograph. He gently took out the photo and stared into it. A girl with odd colored hair stared back.
His eyebrows pinched together in the middle and tears began to spill over.
"I know i'm not losing you but it still feels like your going away. I don't know what to do. I don't know how I can watch you -- marry someone else. I always thought I would be that guy -- to watch you walking towards me. To have you look at me the way you proably look at him. But you know me so well. You've seen who I am, inside and out, and you chose someone else. I guess you didn't like it. No, you're my best friend. You just didn't like it the way I wanted you to."
The heat in the pit was rising with his emotions.
"I just don't know if what I feel for you is even love anymore. At first I thought it was, and maybe it was -- then. But now it feels like i'm just chasing down an impossible dream. And what for? You've never felt the same way, right? I just -- wish things had been different. It hurts so much and I want it to stop. I want to stop loving you!"
The fire inched in closer and closer. The image began to warp and the bag started smoking.
"I've done a lot of thinking the past few days, and I think I finally understand myself better. Understand my feeling towards you and why I feel them -- and I want you to know it's ok. You can stop worrying about me now. I'm going to be a better man. I'm going to be someone, somebody can love, even if it's not you. I'm going to let you go."
The fire consumed Ferris body, heart, and soul as he burned through his feelings. The picture crumbled away in his grasp.
"Goodbye."
-----------------------
Alexis shivered and pulled the blanket in closer around her. She and many others were standing worridly around the pit. Their faces all shared the same kind of anxiety as aprehensive murmers made their rounds. The fire was almost out now and Ferris still haden't come out. The Islanders had told her he was never in the pit for this long. He would always hop out to chat or get a drink and then rekindle the flames. This was unusual. The final glowing embers on the pile of ash went dark and Alexis could feel people looking at her. They were expecting her to go in and check.
She slid down the sandy embankment and a few people followed her lead. They poked around the ashes but there wasn't a single solid object to be found, until. Her leg whacked against something warm and an arm shot up and grabbed her.
Alexis shrieked in terror and suprise, but was immediately overcome with relief as a familiar red mop emerged shaking ashes off. The sun crested over the horizon onto Ferris as he stood up, bathing him in a warm glow.
"F-Ferris! Are you ok!?" Alexis gave him a hug.
He leaned over her and in a raspy voice said, "Yeah."
----------------------
AHAHAHA HOHOHO! Like the phoenix, Ferris is born anew. I was originally going to end it with him saying goodbye to Whitney but then realized it might... uh... sound like he died. So I added the bit here at the end.
It's a given that their powers are linked in with their emotions and stuff, but i've been toying FOREVER with how they are connected. This bit goes off my thought that they can use their abilities to work through their feelings, as if their feelings were something physical. Wouldn't it be nice to burn off your love? No? I suppose it takes from the human experience but that's what writing these is for. Figuring it out. And feedback so I can fix and polish and look less like a dummy who has no idea whats going on, ahahaha what?
Thank-you for reading! <3
