Yeah, warping is no fun. Might I suggest stretching your paper beforehand? [link]
I use a combination of the taping and stapling method. Basically, after putting the tape on, I staple it over the taped spots to ensure the paper won't pull away as it dries.
Also, <3 the painting, but I can tell you did it from a photo because, well, there's usually a lot more color in a landscape than is on here. Sure, it could be a overcast day, but even so, all of the greens in the trees are very similar, and the shadows are very similar in color here, and there's little to no atmosphere -- usually telltale signs that this wasn't done plein air. Often when artists will make a painting of a landscape, they will (at the very least) sit down and make a few very quick color sketches before they photograph the scene and go home because photographs tend not to capture all of the color and light you see in front of you when you're there.
Also, when you're in a room and painting outdoors, the light is so extremely different that what looks like to be a painting of a sunny day in your room looks more like a cloudy day when comparing it to reality.

Thanks for the tips on warping, I'm by no means a professional watercolorist, and this is the probably the 4th one I did, and the largest (18x24), haven't really done any since then, as this was about two years ago.
I would have loved to do this plein air, but at the time when I was in Japan, I lacked the ability, materials, the drive, or the time, it was a 2 week guided tour so you can imagine they wouldn't be happy with someone sitting down to paint, haha. So a photo was the next best thing. If I do ever get the chance to revisit these gardens I will definitely be bringing along something to sketch with!
That said, I do make sure to tell people it's done from a photo because it is rather obvious, hence the description.
Thank you for your thoughts!

Yea me too, while I was doing both of those, I kept thinking about Japan, and especially those gardens, we didn't see enough of them I think.
