Description Three bronze-age barrows at Sammallahdenmäki of Lappi, Ala-Satakunta, Finland.

Sammallahdenmäki is tremendously rich with bronze-age monuments, containing about 40 large burial mounds and monuments of unknown purpose. Some of the stone structures have been heaped into distinct shapes: circles, curves, flat 'floors'... You can see one of the semi-circle shapes in the front here. Remains of burnt human bone, jewellery, pottery, and suchlike have been found in the excavations.

I have a lot more photos from this area, but need to sort through them. Most intriguing of all was the monument called Church Floor (has nothing to do with real churches, though), which is a flat quadrangle of stones stacked 18m long, 19 wide, and about half a meter tall. It's unique of its kind in the whole of Scandinavia. Rather an eerie sight.

Unfortunately we had no time to photograph but a small portion of the Sammallahdenmäki structures yesterday, as we got a bit lost in the forest and had to return via a different route that we had planned. Plus, daylight is about 5 hours currently, so there's no lingering in a pitch-black woods.

With the vagaries of climate clement, Man often must move to much lament.

Such lovely scenery. I wish that there was snow where I lived at during that time.

I bet some of these would make nice postcards.
