Description It's October. The Walking Dead Season 2 comes out this weekend. A zombie had to be drawn. This is for my Walking Dead jam zhourules.deviantart.com/journ… .

This is the first finished painting I've done with my brand new Cintiq 21UX. And I dunno about you, but I notice a huge difference between this and the stuff I used to do with my old tablet. With a screen so big I can get a lot more detail and see everything much clearer. I also got to bust out the anatomy book for this. To get those nasty face muscles right.

Happy Halloween

This is awesome! The level of detail is really nice; I love the hair and the eyes. Damn, I really want to try out a cintiq now I'm really curious to see where you're going to go from here; keep up the good work!

thanks! I tried going back to my Graphire and it was difficult lol. I can still paint and draw on it, but the Cintiq is way more comfortable and of course more accurate. i love it

This is not bad at aaaall, awesome job.
I like a lot of the texture techniques you used like on the muscles and the bone in her cheek. The blur effect under her chin is nice too really makes her face pop.
I give it an A+ heh.
I assume you really like your cintiq, its gotta be REALLY nice being able to draw straight onto the screen.

ZhouRules In reply to kev19180 [2011-10-31 05:32:02 +0000 UTC]

thanks! actually drawing on the screen is just as easy as drawing on my old tablet was. cuz that became as natural as drawing on paper to me. The thing about the Cintiq that makes it better is being closer to the drawing surface. I couldn't get close up on the screen before cuz a keyboard and tablet were in the way. now im right up on it. Another thing is the size. It's huge. bigger than my laptop screen which is big. and compared to my old tablet REALLY big. So I can zoom way in and have all this rendering space and my wrist doesn't crap from drawing in such a small space for hours. It's great. So for some it'd be beneficial cuz you can draw on the screen, but using my old tablet for so long I could easily draw on both.

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-01 21:30:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that makes sense. I know my tablet became second nature to use as well back when I wanted to do everything on there. It must be nice to be able to get those really find details though and be able to go for longer though. I guess it's the artist not his tools and it always will be. I know you're better than to think it would instantly make you a zillion times better just by getting it lol. That kind of mentality is pretty funny to me. I mean, I've been using printer paper, a ruler and a 0.5 BIC mechanical pencil for all my comic stuff so far. And Ive never even seen a proper comic board or a really good high res scanner. And I think I'm doing Okay lol. Not even going to switch unless someone tells me I need to. Its really all in your own personal abilities, you cant really expect something to do magic for you.

ZhouRules In reply to kev19180 [2011-11-02 00:39:16 +0000 UTC]

Well I would recommend the 11x17 art board. the pencil doesn't matter, but bigger paper is standard, especially if it's going to be published and printed. An editor will tell you that's something you need to change. BUT, if it works it works. Definitely get the Gnomon videos. preferably the David Finch one and the Alvin Lee one. But eventually you'll wanna get all the comic ones.

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-02 23:24:34 +0000 UTC]

I once considered investing in the art board but I had to order it off of the internet because nobody sold it around here so I pretty much just said forget it for now. If the editor tells me to switch Im obviously going to switch lol but regardless of my bad personal connection to this conversation, its still a senseless mentality to think your tools and gear will make up for everything you were lacking previously. You see it all the time in sports too. Getting the better equipment is going to make me soo much better! Not really! Lol
I will be purchasing these videos soo, at least the main Finch one I think. Hes got like 4, Im going to get the horse and the girl one. Ill probably get that hand and foot one too because I admit those things still get me.

ZhouRules In reply to kev19180 [2011-11-03 02:37:21 +0000 UTC]

but the paper does make it easier. it wont make you draw like a god lol. but it will make your life easier in the long run. i order it off the internet too. most people do i think. if you get it from bluelinepro it's not too expensive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-04 02:15:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah Bluelinepro was the stuff I was going for. Seems to be the industry standard. And yeah I see your point lol.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZhouRules In reply to kev19180 [2011-11-04 04:06:19 +0000 UTC]

well the industry standard is using the paper companies send you haha. but ya for us amateurs and whatnot, definitely blueline pro. I get all mine from Srathemore though so I'm a hypocrite. Lmao

You learn with time and experience. I started getting serious in 09 and bought tons of tools pros were using and found what worked best for me and what didn't in the last 2 years. So I'd start upgrading to the 11x17 soon just to get the feel for it and find out what kind of paper you like best cuz they're all different. Get used to either printing out or lightboxing layouts to give you some better, cleaner pencils. Start getting into that stuff and finding what works best so as you get work you get closer to pro faster without having to suddenly jump into all of this stuff that you'll have to do later anyways. The Gnomon vids will help cuz you see their process. David Finch draws straight on the page. I did that for a few years only to learn that lightboxing instead will give me better art. Stephen Platt and Alvin Lee lightbox. So just check out that stuff and start trying new stuff out to see if it works or not for you.

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-06 02:50:44 +0000 UTC]

Mhm I just looked into lightboxing, Im probably going to go that route as it does seems easier to get those cleaner pencils. I might as well try getting somewhere with pro techniques seeing as though Im going to try and become one lol. Really makes sense I think?? haha

ZhouRules In reply to kev19180 [2011-11-07 05:06:25 +0000 UTC]

ya for sure haha. hell when I graduated high school I didn't even know comics were drawn on big paper and shrunk down. I didn't know about lightboxing. I knew nothing. It wasn't til I got Gnomon and went to my first comic con seeing the artists actually work when it clicked.

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-09 05:26:51 +0000 UTC]

sweet, Gnomon videos are soon to be added to my collection. I can't believe I don't have them yet. You know I saw them a while ago but I never thought they would be of a lot of help.

ZhouRules In reply to kev19180 [2011-11-09 06:36:04 +0000 UTC]

To me, they're too expensive. Since they're sped up. But they're a good investment for the long run. cuz you get to see a professional's process which you don't always see. And the stuff they talk about is very inspiring and educational as well. And ~voltage24 and I found a way to share dvds so he's sent me some he bought that I didn't have so I've watched all the pencilling ones. Including David Finch's anatomy ones.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-10 19:40:51 +0000 UTC]

They aren't in real time? That's kind of dumb. I'd like to see it all happening, all the moves the artist makes, for my $40 lol. What do you use to share DVDs?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZhouRules In reply to kev19180 [2011-11-10 20:25:05 +0000 UTC]

They're still worth it though. Because you see the whole process happen right there. While they talk over it. I watch them over and over. Cuz they draw some badass stuff, and I learn a lot from what they say as well. Worth the investment. We shared them through yahoo.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-12 18:06:54 +0000 UTC]

Its definitely worth it. I mean how often do you get to see david finch draw something? Even if its in fast time. Still. Its an experience worth having.

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-13 19:04:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah for sure. My cousin has met him, he wanted to do comic book art for a time and Dave actually offered to apprentice him apparently. I just haven't been able to ask for the same thing as Im in school away from Windsor. He decided he felt computer programming was his calling after a while and stopped drawing for the most part but he saw Dave in an art store and he was just like hey man what's up? Not cocky whatsoever and even remembered him. Had a good conversation too from what I hear.

thats cool. if David Finch said hi to me and knew my name I'd poop my pants lol. I've had very few experiences like that, but I've had them and I always think I'll wake up haha.

ya thats why i was so scared to talk to Whilce when I was sitting right next to him. He's a legend and genius. But when we talked he offered help, gave me his email, talked to me for like an hour about things we both happened to like that were art related. It was so cool and totally unreal

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-14 21:09:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's cool, I feel like I need to get over this fear, and the first time I see Finch Im going to go up and talk to him. What's the worst that could happen right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZhouRules In reply to kev19180 [2011-11-14 21:18:07 +0000 UTC]

exactly. just remember he's just a normal guy. he's only a celebrity in our world. and he was where you are once. hell, I've seen his old samples from when he was trying to break into comics and they're terrible. weird seeing crappy sequentials from Finch. but also inspiring to know he was exactly where I was with my first samples. so I'm on the right track.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kev19180 In reply to ZhouRules [2011-11-16 20:25:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, exactly. He probably looks up to a lot of people still. And really ou're never done learning as a comic book artist. Theres so many ways you can expand our work.
Id like to see those sequentials though.. I looked on google and it just comes up with his recent stuff.

Dude... I see a big change... Didn't know a tablet could mean that much of a difference. Loving the detail... And the lighting is definitely on point...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZhouRules In reply to Genochi [2011-10-16 20:00:30 +0000 UTC]

technically you can do it with any tablet. I had my little Wacom Graphire for years and improved a ton with it. ive seen guys get more details than I do with an intuous. But the Cintiq does make it easier on my wrist, on accuracy, and I can see things much bigger and closer now.

Genochi In reply to ZhouRules [2011-10-16 21:16:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh I hope you didn't take it wrong, Your art was amazing with your graphire too And the fact that you are pretty much self taught for digital art and don't go to a school based on media arts is inspiring man...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZhouRules In reply to Genochi [2011-10-16 21:19:19 +0000 UTC]

oh no i didn't take it the wrong way. i just like to make a point that anything can be done with any tool. so people don't go trying to spend money on the best tool right away hoping it'll make them better. cuz its never the case. and thank you. ya sadly they look down on the stuff i do at my college and the schools that teach it are too expensive. so self taught is the way to go. there's tons of great books that have gotten me where i am. plus DA is a great place to learn too.
