For my Degree Project, which is on Shamanism.

Although every culture around the globe had slightly different Shamanic practices a lot of core things are VERY similar, including the initiation process. In many cases the person who is to become a shaman will be isolated somewhere in nature and be deprived of food/water. Spirits will come to them in sleep or otherwise, and often times the person being initiated will recall being physically changed by them- a common example is organs being replaced by crystals, gold and other precious metals. The spirits may also appear as having bird-like features or just be giant birds.
