So I just learned shadows are blue. SHADOWS are BLUE. Why did I not know this until today? I feel like an idiot. I would appreciate anyone sharing other shading basics that I should know about.

Ahem, anyway. This is Allan DeTour, the second out of four children of the house of DeTour, a noble family whose influence has dramatically decreased after the Silver Wars but is still wealthy. Even though he is the second son he is the heir of the house, since his elder sister, Aurelia-Dianne, ran away from home and got disowned.

His parents are despotic snobs and he hates them; the main reason why he applied to the Academy was to get away from them (the other main reason being that he actually likes magic and is good at it). He gets along well with Aurelia-Dianne and they write to each other often, though he still resents her for abandoning him to their parent's mercy.

Allan never wanted to be heir - he hates all the expectations and the obligations that come with it - but he soon realizes that it could be an opportunity to change the obsolete nobility system, and decides to wait and see what comes of it.
