Description Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov, also known as 'Nicky', was born May 18th 1868 in the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoje Selo near Saint Petersburg as the first child of Tsar Alexander III and Tsarina Maria Fjodorovna. He was the cousin of both the later German Emperor Wilhelm II, as well as the later Kings George V of the United Kingdom, Haakon VII of Norway, Christian X of Denmark and Constatine I of Greece. He had three younger brothers: Alexander (1869-1870), Georgi (1871-1899) and Michael (1978-1918), and two younger sisters: Xenia (1875-1960) and Olga (1882-1960). 

In 1894 Nicky married the German princess Alix of Hessen-Darmstadt (1872-1918), who after their marriage adapted the title and name Tsarina Alexandra Fjodorovna. The couple got four daughters: Olga (1895-1918), Tatjana (1897-1918), Maria (1899-1918) and Anastasia (1901-1918) and one son: Aleksej (1904-1918).

On May 26th 1896 Nikolai was crowned Tsar, afer his father had died in 1894.On March 4th 1917 he was forced to abdicate. On the night of July 16th to 17th 1918 he, his wife and children were executed by revolutionists. In 1998 their bodies were reburried in Saint Petersburg. Ten years later the remains of Maria and Aleksej were descovered and identified.
