Ahnko, the magnificent Faime stallion, had not been properly ridden in over a year. Things with the Zlesdins had gotten so very much out of hand with the grading shows and Pilot’s cross country career picking up and also the fact that they are very high maintenance horses. However Ahnko waited his turn in the spotlight patiently during the year, knowing that his time would come. His schedule leading up to the schooling show had become more and more demanding, all this to get him into shape for the upcoming dressage season. He had lost quite an amount of fat, but gained muscle to make up for the lesser weight and his neck was evening out to suit the Faime breed standard more.
The lodging for both horse and rider at Sunrise Valley where a great feat for the team of two. Gabriel had a double bed with an en suite bathroom and a view over the cross country field. It was like a holiday to her. The food that they had for breakfast was a feast and consisted of bacon, eggs, toast, an assortment of fruits and yogurts and muesli.
Ahnko on the other hand was not as lucky… he was lodged in a paddock near the show jumping arena in close proximity of the weaning stables where a choir of young horses sand for their mothers. Ahnko had never particularly liked foals… The paddock he was currently staying in was smaller than the one he shared with Sia, the blue Faime, back home. One up side to his stay at Sunrise Walley was the lovely pail of oats and apples he received for his breakfast. Back at Fox Estate there weren’t as many luxusier.
Gabriel felt sorry that Ahnko had to stay in an open grassy paddock rather than in one of the fancy, high class stables. The reason behind this is that Fox Estate is not a wealthy farm, there are no stables or even any facilities other than the two bedroom one bathroom cliff side house that she and Makunda share, and a shade port for every field. Gabriel has always been a bit weary of expecting her horses to move into stables when at shows as the risk of injury to the horses that might be stressed in the indoor environment was much higher.
The hot day had cooled down quite significantly by the time Gabriel had clasped the last buckle on Ahnko’s bridle, she stepped back to admire her handiwork and was once again in awe of the magnificent purple steed in front of her. She had received quite a few strange looks from fellow competitors who were probably wondering why this woman was saddling up a horse in an open field instead of under cross-ties in the stable area. But she didn’t care. She and this amazing horse of her where going to show them how a dressage schooling show should go!
When they finally entered the arena, the sun was just about set and cast a soft light on Ahnko as he started dancing to the prescribed dressage test, trotting in a diagonal, canter down centre a quick pirouette or two and X halt salute. As fast as it had started the test was over and Gabriel and Ahnko, as the last competitors of the day left the arena.
