Nice work, I like the choice of the fairly tight composition, and the study of the shape and texture in this is really nice. I think a little more contrast would help, but otherwise, very nice work

I did a version of it with more contrast, but I didnt' like it. I don't know why, but it seemed to me fake.

hmm... nice picture...
you took the pic at a great angle but for composition-wise, improvements can be made...
however, i do like the mood that it brings. i think your choice of making it black and white gave the whole pic a very weathered look. because of this, the object looks very run-down. the subject of the photo is also very neat; you managed to capture historical/cultural and probably social aspects of the people in the location just through the object.
to improve, you could probably observe more photographs (a lot here on DA) and keep questioning yourself, 'what if...?'. also, dwell into what you want to find out;research more before taking a photograph. art is deep, it has a lot of meanings; a piece of work is the artists' avenue to convey a certain idea/theme that he wants to communicate to the rest of the world.
hopefully this comment brings some meaning and inspiration to continue pursuing photography.
