Description I drew Katy Perry a few months ago and I've gotten much better since then so I decided to try again, I feel this version does her more justice

haha I'm not really sure... I just concentrated on doing little bits at a time and they all fit together to make her hair turn out like that

I really wanted to do a version of her that wasn't from a photo shoot and overdone by other people, I'm sure you will have seen a few like that. I'm not an artist like yourself and taught myself to draw so thank you very much, I appreciate it

First off, I just want to say how amazing this is <3 && I saw your other katy perry picture, and I can tell you've really worked hard, because the difference between the two, is astonishing... I am actually working on a katy perry portrait myself, but I dont want just an "okay" turn-out, I want to really capture her emotion in it as well (As you did VERY well), but for some reason, I can never get mine to turn out like this
-.- I've gotten really good with faces, but the hair...GAHH... seems to mock me as I tryy -.-
I read how you explained it in the other comments, but I'm not so great with directions either I am (for obvious reasons) much more of a 'visual learner'
... Ok, I promise there was an actual point to this comment when I started, but now... I have no clue what it was o.o
XD Anyways, I really love this drawing && it now has me determined to finish that portrait...Even if it kills me -.-
But I would love to know what kind of pictures you practiced/trained with to get so good in only a few months, because that would greatly help... Thanks && Again, amazing job

Well thank you very much! I'm a huge fan of Katy Perry so for a start I really wanted it to turn out well like you do. The original Katy Perry I did was the just the third drawing I actually worked hard on so there was a lot of room for improvement at that stage. I've naturally good at art so it's been fairly easy for me to improve quickly, the other drawings in my gallery were all the practice I had at getting better, but for this one in particular I upped the anti. I went to the local art store and asked what they recommended I should use to do the best drawing I possibly could. Prior to this I only had a 6B pencil and my A4 visual diary left over from high school (I used those to draw the original). They sent me home with 140gsm A3 paper which I think is meant to be pretty high quality. It definitely made the shading come out smoother in the facial features. Also I got a full set of proper art pencils. One other thing was a kneaded eraser. So by doing it bigger it was easier to do more detail, better paper meant smoother shading and a decent range of pencil hardness allowed for a lot more subtle to extreme shading changes. I know they say a poor workman blames his tools but it's actually bullshit, a good set of equipment goes a long way if you are serious about what you're doing. Goodluck!

Thanks
I just recently went out and bought a pencil set ranging from 2H to 4B, plus an ebony pencil in case I need something reallyy dark, so hopefully that will help when it comes down to the quality (To be honest, I usually just use different amonts of pressure on a mechanical pencil, so this should be a helpful change)
&& Im a big Katy fan too, so I definitely want to impress even myself with this one (Im drawing her from the video 'Wide Awake' becuase I am lovingg the purple hair <3)

This is well done, those shades, mostly i love how did you do her hair, can you tell me how to do hair like this ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yeah-Drawing-Yeah In reply to made-in-estonia [2012-04-01 00:04:07 +0000 UTC]

Well I used a 2H, B, HB, 2B, 4B and 6B. I did a base layer of strokes with a light pencil all really close together to get a feel for the shape and direction of the hair, then I gradually went through the pencils getting darker and darker to make it more complicated. The key thing was to use sharp pencils so the hair strands didn't all blend into one big blob. I used the 2H pencil for the random strands sticking out the sides. Lots of contrast is good too. Hope this helps a little
