Description This is the chainmail bandlogo inlay I just finished. Omnia is my favorite band, the best band in the world, and the closest thing to pure inspiration. They make a sort of music they call "NeoCeltic Pagan Folk". You can listen to samples here: [link] . You can also see the logo of the band there.

Rings: over fivethousand made from 1.2mm blackened steel and brass wire wound around a 4mm rod.
Weave: Trinity.
Weight: ugh, don't know. Full shirt will be around 6 kilograms.
Current use: It's part of a shirt I'm making; when (if?) it's finished it'll consist of about fiftythousand rings, entirely done in Trinity.

The logo was designed by Steve from Omnia, and he holds the copyright, and all that.. I have his permission by the way, see also [link] ... Steve is so cool!!

Can I ask how you planned out the inlay? Did you draw it on a grid or some such? I would love to do more work with inlays, but unfortunately my artistic inclinations are lacking in that area, and I haven't been able to get past very basic geometric figures. Any tips you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

Wow.. it must take some patience to inlay an image into maille.
How'd you do it? I've always wanted to try.

Well, I started by taking the original logo in high resolution from their website, then asked their permission, then I resized it to a width of only 80pix, then I decreased colour depth to only two colours and manually changed some of the pixels to make the inlay clearer, then I loaded the tiny image in IGP (Zlosk's Irregular Grid Painter [link] ) and chose the Trinity weave, then went through the entire patterned picture to redo some of the rings to make the inlay much clearer, and finally printed it and wove it in chainmaille. Making the patterned picture before weaving took as long as the weaving itself, but that is just because I couldn't decide how big to make it and I did it in 90pix (90 rings) and 70pix (70 rings) wide as well, and because I didn't know how to use IGP or even paint.

You gave this to Steve as a present? He must have been really pleased.

No I didn't; I plan to make it into a shirt but I'm still figuring out how to cut tens of thousands of rings so I can weave the rest.. Well actually I just haven't found the guts to do it

Very nice looking inlay. Haven't worked in too much blackened steel, it always seemed too dirt to me. Did you find a way to clean it up, or is yours just normally clean? I Love the inlay and will be visiting that band's site to check them out. Trinity is just pure insanity by the way, and thats enough said there lol. Keep at it man, I wanna see the finished piece.

I didn't. It's not 'clean'. Figured that out way too late.. *sigh* I find that if I let it go through my hands for a minute, my hands are black! And the oldest rings have less blackness than the newer ones, so I fear that eventually the black rings will turn mild steel again Well, at least the brass will still come out.

XLonewolfX In reply to Xzorby [2006-06-22 03:51:29 +0000 UTC]

Gotta be careful with that stuff then. Mild steel is very very rust prone (I know for experience). Give it a good going over in a tumbler when its done, to be sure its good and clean, then perhaps try hitting it with some clear coat or something. I did that with my warhammer, and it kept it clean and rust free. And specially saying as that warhammer takes a ton of abuse....or rather should I say it DEALS tons of abuse.

Xzorby In reply to XLonewolfX [2006-06-22 07:34:00 +0000 UTC]

I actually don't WANT it to be perfectly clean... I think. I love the more aged look. The black will rub off partly, and maybe it'll become a bit brownish black of rust. I also know from experience that just wearing rusty chainmail makes the rust come off, and I don't mind getting a bit dirty. And I'd wear it too much to let it rust away completely
Thanks for the advice & comment anyway

mhmm yes use does keep rust down. Also if you've got one, a good ol tumbler style dryer works wonders for getting the rust off a hauberk. My first one, my mom wouldnt let me tumble it in her old beast of a dryer, so i headed to the laundramat. They gave me some trouble, but I reminded them that i did put my 2 quaters in the machine and therefore, I had it for 20 minutes lol.

Ugh, veeeeel te lang. Weken. Maar dat is omdat ik deze 'weave' nog nooit had gedaan, en nog nooit inlays had gemaakt, en alle ringetjes eerst moest maken etc... Remember me by the way? ^^
