Description My favorite piece of chainmail, the bikinitop. I created this piece for a fashion show about two months ago, and they absolutely loved it. Must be the model wearing it..

It goes with a chainmail skirt that I made ([link] ).

I removed the background and noise in PSP. I'm afraid I don't have a better picture.

Model: Lotte Stolk.
Rings: 3000 (I guess) made from 1.6mm galvanised steel wire wound around a 9mm rod.
Weave: Half Persian 3in1 Sheet 6, with Half Persian 3in1 straps.
Weight: about a kilogram.
Current use: I gave it to the model.

She said it was surprisingly comfy, considering it's made out of steel. It doesn't pinch or anything, and the weave's actually quite soft.

However, the thing's bloody cold to put on, if you don't warm it up first!

I wish I had skills like this :F Or any skills at all, lol. Maybe something underneth would make it more comfy? (Something like shirt under chainmail, but stick to it) :F

how do you make your rings? This is freakin awesome! I haven't seen one of these tops that actually covers anything. But this one is pretty solid..

I make my rings out of steel wire; I start with a rod/mandrel-thingy with a hole drilled in so I can put the beginning of the wire through, then I turn the mandrel so the wire becomes a coil, and then I use cutters to cut the coils into rings.

And yeah, these rings make nice and dense HP3-1S6

Right on! Rings are soooo expensive and I need different sizes and I hate waiting... I tried making mine before, but I think they didn't work because I made them too big

If you use the European 4-1 weave, the best Aspect Ratio (that's the inner diameter of the ring, divided by the wire diameter) is about 4-5. That means that if you use 1/16" wire (=16ga =1.6mm), a good inner diameter would be 1/4" (=6mm) to about 5/16" (=8mm).

And forgive me if you already know that!

But does it have a matching bottom? That is the question

Xzorby In reply to experiment48602 [2006-06-20 22:18:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, in DragonScale. But that one's not finished, and it's made for somebody else, and she's probably not going to model. I'm actually not even sure if I'll ever finish it..
The top was used in combination with a simple 6-1 skirt instead, at a local charity fashion show. They loved it!

I believe about two weeks. The ringmaking & weaving part was easy, the seams were a bit harder.. But the hardest (& most fun) part was measuring and fitting and all that

I like.

I never could really get the hang of making chainmail, I always managed to mess it up some how, heehee.

How long did it take you to make this?
