First mentioned by Arab historians around 921-950 AD as neighbors of the Idel (Volga) Bulgars.
In the 13th century, the Kazan Khanate made the Udmurts to pay them taxes but didn't intervene in their tribal society..

AFter the destruction of the Khzan Khanate the Udmurts were conquered by the Russians and rose numerous times in rebellion.
In 1918-1920, the Udmurts joined the Idel-Ural State which was abolished by the Bolsheviks and in 1920 Votsk Autonomous Oblast was created, renamed Udmurt Autonomous Oblast in 1932, which in turn became the Udmurt Autonomous Socialist Republic in 1934.

Between 1937-1938, Stalin murdered most of the Udmurt's nationalist intellectuals and industrialized the country bringing with a mass of Russian settlers.

The Udmurt Republic in its present form has excisted since september 20, 1990.
Area: 42.100 sq km
Pop: 1.523.000
with Udmurts constituting 52.3% and Russians 43.3%..

Nationalist organizations are trying to reverse the effects of intensive russification.
