It is a birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.

In the Italian War of Independence in the 1860s,
Tuscany was transferred from Austria to the newly unified nation of Italy.

During WWII, it was a site of the Italian Social Republic, last stand of the Mussolini's fascist regime.
After the WWII, Tuscany once more flourished as the cultural center of Italy.

There are some autonomist movements active in the region, including Lega Nord Toscane with 6.5% support of the voters in 2010.
