Description Cimbria - 13 Communes / De Tzimbar Von Dreizehn Gemeinden / I Cimbri Dei Tredici Comuni

WikiItalian[link]

This area of Northern Italy was populated by the Bavarian-Allemanic tribes in 11th and 12th centuries who formed a confederation of thirteen communities in present-day Verona Province. It thrived
until 1797 under the protection of the Venetian Republic.

Napoleonic invasion and, later, integration into Austrian Habsburg Empire brought the end to the self-government and autonomy.
Italianization campaign during the fascist era nearly eradicated the Germanic language spoken by the Cimbrians.

The language of the Thirteen Communes is not so substantially different from the High German as is the tongue of the Seven communes.
That language is now on the way to a modest recovery.

Ljetzan (Gletzen or Giazza) municipality serves as a capital and cultural center for the Thirteen Communes.
