Rakhine (formerly Arakan) is a state of Myanmar located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal.
Area: 36.780 sq km
Pop : 3.836.000
Cap : Sittwe (Akyab)

It was, according to the legend, founded around 3325 BC as a Kingdom of Arakan.
First recorded dynasty was noted about 925 AD .

Conquered by Awa (Burma) in 1784, it became part of British Lower Burma in 1826.
In 1937 it was included in the British Colony of Burma, and since January 4, 1948 part of the independent Burma/Myanmar.

Rakhine/Arakan was the site of many battles in WWII and since then there are various independist,
separatist and autonomous movements active in the region.

In 1974, Ne Win constituted Rakhine State in place of Arakan division giving the Rakhine majority at least nominal leading role.
