Description "1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer."

Revelation 6:1-2

I'm continuing with my concentration of creatures from Biblical dreams/visions/etc. this semester. Since I am focusing on the beasts, I didn't want to put the rider in this.

I know, its pretty calm and tame for one of the horses of the apocalypse, but there's reasoning behind it.

For one thing, the word apocalypse actually means revelation in Greek, so technically, it can still be considered a horse of the apocalypse without the end of the world being portrayed.

There are several interpretations of the particular chapter this comes from, and I used one that's a bit less known. It is that each horse represents a time period of human history. More specifically the one I used is where each horse represents about 1000 years.

The first horse represents the first 1000 years. In the back I used several symbols in the background. On the left is an apple tree to represent Adam and Eve. On the right is a Great Basin Bristlecone Pine, or the Methuselah tree. The white building is a city wall to represent Enoch. If you look closely at the tower part of the wall there is a lion head and around it are six wings (the wings are pretty hard to see). In the first verse of the quote it mentions "one of the four beasts". I think the beasts it's referring to is one of the creatures mentioned in a previous chapter, which I have rendered here. [link] The verses following this passage refer to the next beasts as "the second beast ", "the third beast ", and "the fourth beast ". I'm not sure how much emphasis is put on the word "the", but I'm assuming they are being referred to in the same order as before (lion, calf, man, eagle).

Before I started this, I knew I wanted to make sure it was different from the other pictures I had done. So, I made sure not do use paint, a portrait format, and (originally) color. Well, I realized that it's hard to render an apple tree far away without color. Another aspect I had not intended was that it is less detailed, not because I was lazy, but that the pastel won't allow it (the last time I used pastel was over a year ago, so I forgot about this). When I was working on it, up close it didn't seem to be working out, but when I stepped back a bit, it looked a lot better.

I'll have the other horses up soon, but I don't think they will end up looking quite as calm.

There is some close up texture that can't be seen from here that looks kind of interesting if you want to see it here it is. [link]

Done in pastels.

I know these are really old now haha, but all your horses are a really awesome ideas. I've always found mythology, the occult and religion to be full of interesting stories and imagery.

Very fascinating description.

When I first saw the horse though, I thought it was a dragon. Ooops. XD

Thanks.

Well, it's generally not an angle you see a horse at.

You're welcome.

That's true...I think it's because the chest and legs looked so large, I just assumed. XD That and a lot of people make dragons look rather horsey.

Very interesting use of the symbolism. The texture came out very nice for pastels.
